I got this article from a Norhtern Woodlands newsletter about Alexander DeLucia who is director or trails for AMC.

There is short section on the 5 year funding the AMC received to renovate the Franconia Ridge loop. Not much but more than I have seen to date.
We’re not changing the alignment of this section of trail, but we’re going big with cut stone stairs and really stabilizing the existing tread.
MATC has been doing that in the 100 Mile Wilderness and other locations for many years, they drill, split and form stone slabs and build staircases, it may not look natural but if done right its durable. In the case of OBP they will need to do extensive scree walls to keep the public from skipping the new and existing rock work.
