Does anyone know what the rules are for camping above treeline in the area of Mt Adams, Madison - or any of the presidential for that matter. Otherwise, are there designated cakpgrounds below treeline or can we just go a certain distance off the trail. Any info for any peak in the area would be useful. Thanks!

Not allowed unless there is 2 feet of snow on the ground, which you won't find this time of year above treeline. So, no camping above treeline this year. And treeline is defined as where the average tree height is 8' or less.

There are many designated places to stay near Adams and Madison. The Valley Way Tentplatforms are just below the hut on the Valley Way, about .5 miles down. There are only two platforms there, so get there early for a Saturday night stay.

The RMC has three facilities up fairly high. Gray Knob and Crag Camp are cabins with no tenting allowed, the Perch is a shelter with 4 tent platforms.

Lower down there the Osgood Ridge campsite, and many designated spots in the Great Gulf down by the river, but that's a lot lower elevation.

It's legal to camp pretty much anywhere off the trail up there, you are not required to go 200' from the trail, but the reality is that flat terrain is hard to find up high and it's much easier to use a designated place.
