the latest word on McCanes

Can anyone tell me the latest development on accessibility of the N-P Trail through McCanes for NPT thruhikers? I see in several places that I must call to ask permission, but someone said not to any more.

If you approach McCanes via the NPT from Durant Lake, you will encounter a sign in the woods which states to the effect that "the part of the trail that passes through McCanes Resort is closed to local travel and those seeking nearby destinations, and is only open to long distance hikers and foot travel as part of a project to complete the NPT end to end". I am pretty sure he doesn't want people calling him at this point, but I could be mistaken.

I believe the signage at McCanes is different, which I suspect he put up to discourage entry from his resort.
