    Incomming Weather FYI

I wanted to say all that.... ...but I was afraid they would call me a weather nerd :D Stooopid, that sounds in line with everything I am hearing. I ask, when will this year's mud season end? The trails were in better shape in May than they have been throughout much of the summer. Guess, I...

    Incomming Weather FYI

The National Huricane Center www.nhc.noaa.gov is showing that both Bonnie and Charley may stear up the east coast this weekend after making landfall in Florida. The forcast map for Charley even shows that Charley may still be packing tropical storm force winds. Anybody else got better...

    Dixes / Dial / Colvin - Suggestions?

Thanks Thanks for all the good info. We were planning the trip for this weekend but the weather looks like its turning for the worse. Lets hope our two storms down in the Gulf of Mexico decide not to travel up the eastern seaboard. After all the rain this spring/summer the last thing we need...

    Trap Dike Exit?

Early A bit further up it is much easier and doesn't look like the class 4 move that is shown in the picture. Although, the picture is much deceiving, its not as exposed as the picture suggests.

    Trap Dike Exit?

Exit Here Here is the waypoint from my last trip: WGS84 Coord. Frame (Lat/Lon/Ht) EXIT N44.130661 W073.963522 3687.3 Here is some associated text from Andrew Lavigne's website: The exit of the dike is reached at about the 3700-foot level. Attempting to exit out earlier than that will...

    What IS the correct pronounciation?

Geographic Dialect As a non-native NEer, I am sitting here taking notes. People give us southern folk trouble for our slang. Some of the pronounciations are brutal for my tounge. I am afraid if I ever ask for directions on trail. You all (pronounced yall) might just cock your head to one...

Trap Dike compared to Huntington Ravine?

The Dyke Gets My Vote Mike, From my experience the Dyke would get my vote. In my opinion none of the moves up Huntington measure to Class 4. I believe and some trip reports say as much that the "crux" through the Dyke and certainly some exits (if you exit to early) are class 4. But then...

    Dixes / Dial / Colvin - Suggestions?

Thats What I'm Afraid Of Sto, Yeah, I am thinking that last day is going to be long. Given that the whole trip will be with a full pack I suspect it will be brutal. And if you have ever seen my pack or read my jokes about how my hiking partner carries very little then you know I will be...

Santanoni Range - Is This The Wrong Time Of The Year?

Who Needs Spas When... You can get your mud bath in the Santa's! I hiked up to Bradley Pond Lean to Thursday 7/29, and hiked the Santa. Range and out on Friday 7/30. Never in my hiking life have I seen such mud. Going back to the lean to on Friday to pick up gear and head out I stepped off a...

    Dixes / Dial / Colvin - Suggestions?

I am planning a 3+ day trip to take on the Dix Range, Dial and Nippletop, and the Colvin Range with the trip starting from Elk Lake (trip plan below). My biggest problem with the plan is coming back to Elk Lake from Blake/Pinnacle. Is there an alternative to the trails that lead north &...

    Mt. Mansfield Maps

Topozone/ USGS Map In my experience the Topozone/USGS product for Mt. Mansfield does not show many of the trails around the mountain. Green Mountian guide book is much more comprehensive. At the same time I understand that Underhill state park has a map that shows more of the trails (it may...

Any bears sited out in the ADK 46

Hike with Dogs not Bears Percious, I had a similar experience. The mutt and I hiked Marcy, Haystack in mid May. I stayed near JBL and at Slant Rock in mid May. Saw no poop, saw no bears. I heard a little rustling and grunting from behind the lean to in the direction of my food cache...

Call Underhill State Park Markv, My fiance and I are doing Mt. Washington and Mt. Mansfield over the weekend in an effort to finish off our NE State highpoints. If going up sunset, laura cowles, or halfway house, your best (read as only) bet is Underhill State Park. The website and phone...

Extra Efforts for Hiking with Significant Other

In preparation for another trip into The Presidentials with my fiance this weekend and after reading the thread on "things we do to get our wives, girlfriends, etc... to allow/put up with our hiking," I am curious about another question: What sort of extra efforts do yall (please forgive the...
