    Winter Camping

I have a pair of Asolo plastic boots that I had widened at the local ski shop. They were able to widen them just in the toe box - right where I needed the room - and they are now amazingly comfortable.

Looking for advice on Whiteface/Passaconaway loop

Hi I'm planing a day trip to summit Whiteface and Passaconaway as a loop. I have never been to the area, and wonder if there are any flaws to my plan. My thinking to go up the Blueberry Ledge trail to the Whiteface summit, across the Rollins trail to the Passaconaway summit, then return via...

An Explanation of Wind Speed and Power

Good write up. I sorta knew the "something increases by 4 " rule... but wasn't aware of the details you've provided. Hearing this, I find it hard to believe anything would have been left atop Mt Washington back in 1934 when 231 mph was recorded! Rick

More qualified than I! I too will be driving a grey Subaru Outback... The forecast for the region looks cooperative. I'm still not quite 100% certain of my ability get up there from Mass in the morning though. We are expecting sleet, ice, snow and rain. I should have a good idea how it will...

9:00 AM Sunday sounds perfect. If anyone else wants to join please feel free to reply, or simply show up (though a reply here would be appreciated). The assumption is you have full winter gear and experience. This won't be a particularly strenuous hike, but physical fitness and winter skills are...

All good points. I have been turned back at tree line on that mountain on 2 previous attempts due to high wind and white-out conditions. The forecast will be key to maybe picking an alternate (wooded) peak, as well as to whether or not I can even drive up there Sunday morning!

Great. I think we might want to recruit one more participant because: 1) I have not climbed via Glencliff either, and it'd be nice to have someone along who's done it. 2) Given the forecast, we'll likely be breaking trail, and another sole will be welcome to share the chore. #1 is not is...

Thanks for the reply Lefty. Given the forecast, I had to move my Sunday plans to Saturday, meaning Sunday 2/22 is now the day I will be free to hike. You ask which trails: - I have wanted to do the Webster/Jackson loop counter clockwise in winter ever since doing in summer many years ago...

Forgot how bad Polartec Fleece is

I swear by my TNF "Denali Fleece" (aka Polertec 300) insulating layer. I once wore it to summit Mt Washington is sub-zero temps, and roasted because I'd put on too many layers for fear of getting cold (fleece zip T base layer under, and Goretex shell over it all). After several hours of...

Hmm, 60 views and no replies... Maybe because folks don't know me. I'm just an average winter hiker, who rarely gets a chance to get out. And when I do, it is rare that any of of my hiker friends are free the same day. So rather that go solo, I figured I'd post here. The list above contains a...

Falling Waters Trail Jan 7, 2015

Great overall condition. Microspikes were helpful. Some serious ice on the trail that proved tricky but not prohibitive. Cover was a little thin in spots. All stream crossings were frozen over. Trail broken all the way to ridge. I used microspikes up to tree line, snowshoes above tree line...

Wildflower season on Washington's Alpine Garden

I am hoping to get out for a hike next weekend (6/13) and just realized this may coincide perfectly with the wildflower season on Washington's Alpine Garden... Something I've been wanting to see for years. Does anyone have any info on when the blooms are expected to peak this year? I will...
