    Willey, Field & Tom?

Heading up to the Highland Center on Saturday and hope to do the above 3 peaks on Sunday. My sons and regular hiking companions are caught up in new school year events and I would love some company. Sunday's weather looks perfect. Anyone else? Bob H

Maximum Maine - 9 peaks in 6 days

SAT, AUG 28, 2004 After much planning we left in two cars at 5 am for Maine via, Vt & NH. On the way through Franconia Notch we acknowledged the faceless Old Man who fell into history last year. Our immediate destination was Old Speck, the southern most of the ME 4000’ers. We arrived at the AT...

    Maine 4000'ers

Thank you ! Thank you all for the great info! Papa Bear, that's some journal - you strained my printer! I am leading a group of varied hiking ability on a 4 day trip to the Sugarloaf area and I wanted to get as much info together as I could. I've never been hiking in Maine and want to start on...

Redington How far would you say it is from the AT to where you parked? Have you ever hiked from South crocker to Redington? We are going to do N & S Crocker as a day trip and wondered if it might just be as easy to b'whack over once we are on SC. Your thoughts and thanks! Bob H.

    Sawteeth-My 46th

Sawteeth I agree with Stoopid (I always wanted to say that!) I finished on Sawteeth and we went up Weld and enjoyed the views down Scenic (longer) towards the lake. A great choice to finish on. Good luck. I hope the falls are all roaring their salute to you as you finish. Bob H. :)

    great range

Sawteeth Absolutely do Gothics via Pyramid! The view of Gothics from Pyramid is one of the best in the 'dacks. The run up Sawteeth from the col is pretty easy. After Gothics you can bail or do Armstrong and then bail; or do UWJ and then bail; or, if you are very strong, do LWJ too, and then...

    Allen Aug. 18th

Our group did Allen on Weds, 8/11 and it was WET. With all the subsequent rain, you can bet on a wet, wet day. On the trip in you get wet from all the tall grass and early morning dew. Any where on the trail prone to mud will be very muddy. If you have gaitors, bring them. I would also suggest a...

    Best dog breeds for hiking?

I have a 2 & 1/2 year old Siberian Husky and he is crazy for hiking. I have to keep him on leash or he will take off and leave me in the dust. I have a "skijoring" harness and that keeps my hands free. He instinctively follows the trail and whoa to anyone who tries to take the lead from him...

    Maine 4000'ers

John, Thanks for the directions to redington. We'll scope out that trailhead or just run over from S. Crocker if we get there at a decent time. Its nice to have options and we appreciate the info.

    Maine 4000'ers

Re: Overnight or day hiking only?? All of the 4000'ers are on or near the AT. We considered doing that stretch of the AT and hitting them all... but... I'm getting spoiled in my "old age" and don't want to carry the real heavy pack. The Sugarloaf idea seemed like a good way to hit some peaks...

    Maine 4000'ers

Thanks, Dave. The maps will start to make more sense once I hear from some locals and others who have hiked it. I'm heading up there later in Aug. and will let you know how we do. Thanks again. Bob H.

    Maine 4000'ers

Heading for Maine for 4 days at Sugarloaf and hope to "bag" as many of the 4000'ers as we can. Any advice on the most efficient plan of attack? We are fairly strong hikers who would like to spend the night in our cozy condo and not a tent. We may have an extra person to spot cars and/or pick us...
