    Best, most indestructible hiking boots??

I have a pair of custom Limmers, and they are very heavy. I'm a size 11 (in mass market shoes) and mine weigh over 5 lbs (for the pair). I just got them last fall and don't plan on using them for winter hiking, so they're still in the break-in period. My previous leather hiker was an Italian...

    Pace, Intervals And Rest

One option is to do other activities that have higher intensity and cardio conditioning than hiking. I mountain bike, trail run, cross country ski, and workout a lot in general. I find hiking is the "easy" activity, physically. Strength training can also help- the stronger a muscle is the...

Follow Up Story on Kate Matrosova

That was a nice piece on a tragic, sad story. Sounds like the world lost a very bright light with her passing.

    Pack Question

I'm intrigued by those MHM packs, but looking through their website, I can't find anything that says where the packs are actually made. I see they're a Colorado company, but you'd think if they were a Made in the U.S.A. product, they'd be saying so clearly.....I don't see it. Anyone? I love...

    Question on Trail Running Vests

I use a Nathan Zealos and am very happy with it. 2L reservoir, and has a separate bottle for mixables, like Heed, Skratch, etc.. I used it for an 11+ mile trail race this fall and was very pleased with it. No bounce, which to me is the biggest factor in a running hydration pack.

A recipe for a downright nasty weekend

Wifey and I did 2.4 miles of snowshoeing in Sheldrick Forest today in Wilton, NH. Absolutely stunning place if you've never been. Had to break trail the whole time, so the pace was snail like- took us an hour and 40 to slog the 2.4. Great day- will get out for another local 'shoe tomorrow and...

Good deal at LL Bean outlet currently

Sizing was interesting. I think the perfect size would have been Medium and 1/2. If I were just getting one to wear out to the local pub and look the part, I'd have gone with the medium. I went with the large so that I could accommodate a base layer and midweight fleece under it, and still have...

Good deal at LL Bean outlet currently

Just a heads up- LL Bean outlets are having a sale on insulated outerwear- 30% off lowest price. Just picked up one of their lightweight stowable primaloft jackets (ala Patagonia Puff) for $56. Great deal. Love how light it is and how much it packs down- it's going to take up a lot less room in...

    Rangers taking pictures of plates?

After reading "Ranger Confidential" I'll give the men and women who do that job a little latitude. They deal with a lot of crap that wouldn't occur to most of us. On the "armed ranger" front... My wife and I were crossing the bridge heading back to the Lincoln Woods parking area after doing...

Sure to Be Removed - Patriot's Postseason

I was at the game yesterday. 4th quarter was the loudest I've ever heard Gillette. Amazing game to be at.

An interesting choice for winter clothing

    Winter hiking boot rentals….

I think I'm SOL in So. NH.

    Winter hiking boot rentals….

Bumping this thread - Anyone know of a place that will rent boots in Southern NH? I'm in Amherst, and looking to take an AMC intro to ice climbing course in February, but need boots that accept step-in crampons. As far as I can tell only places that rent are up north (IME, etc..), and this...

Pumpelly Trail On Monadnock In Winter

Haha. Yeah, I was being a bit tongue in cheek. I didn't know that Fuji has a road now. I've often quoted that fact, of Monadnock being the 2nd most hiked mountain in the world. I never had any indication to the validity of the claim, but even if it was totally erroneous, I figured the...

Pumpelly Trail On Monadnock In Winter

I've hiked it twice in the past few weeks, but I parked at HQ and did the Cascade Link up to Pumpelly. It has become one of my favorite hikes- nice views, variety of terrain, and relative solitude on a relatively busy mountain.
