    DSLR Lenses?

I would keep the 18-55 lens on the camera and carry the telephoto in my pack or maybe even leave it home, especially if I was in the mountains. Too much gear can make it a hassle to take pictures. Its all about the picture

what do you wear for pants?

I wear EMS convertible pants with a Mountain Hardwear (somewhat heavy) zip over for cold weather and sometimes I wear cotton Carharts because I like to break rules.

    Santa's Elves

I like Scalphunters by Raymond Potvin. It is a history of Rogers Rangers and the wars during the colonial era including the battle of Lovewell Pond in the Fryeburg, Maine area. It is all part of the heritage of the area we hike in.

    Following Atticus

I could borrow this book but think I am going to get it for my Kindle. It will be nice to have handy for nights in the tent. Carried the Kindle up to Owls Head a few weeks ago and read aloud a ghost story. Still don't understand why I have 35 plus books and the Kindle doesn't get any heavier...

"The Grid" has replaced "The List"

If you get an infinite number of monkeys out hiking everyday eventually they will complete the grid.

Biggest D'oh "That Was Stupid" Moment

Went to do a solo hike of Passaconway. At trail head had everything ready... pack on, snacks, camera, hiking poles, pack adjusted started walking and realized I left my water bottles back in Kennebunk. Also there was the long drive to do a three day traverse of the Presidentials. Went to put on...

    Bald, Chokecherry, and Hurricane Bushwhacks

Use of ham radios was interesting. I got my license a while back and tried the "wilderness protocol" but have not had a lot of luck getting contacts. Would like to see more people that have licenses carrying them. Myself included.

Five Maine 4Ks – A “rocky” start with a spectacular finish

Saddleback and Wildcat seem much more friendly to hikers. Guess considering the problems they have had at Sugarloaf I can understand their policy. Hope someday we don't have to purchase hiking tickets!

    Traditional Snowshoes

I really like using my light weight aluminum Tubbs Snowshoes but there is something special about older traditional wood and rawhide shoes. I have had a pair of wooden shoes made in Minot, Maine since I was a kid. This winter I took them out of storage, wiped the dust off, brushed on some...

A Reflection On the Mountains We All Love

I found a nice copy for free at the recycling room of the Kennebunk Transfer Station (dump). After reading these posts I realize what a valuable find it is.
