    GUide Cards & $500 Fine

You are right! The cards are easy to obtain. I had several sent to me for distribution to other CT trip Leaders. All the Forest Service asks is the leader fill out a simple trip report. This is used to monitor trail usage. Also note the new contact for the FS.

    GUide Cards & $500 Fine

Hot off the AMC YM Leaders Guide: The White Mountain National Forest (WMNF) and the AMC have an arrangement where the Forest Service "allows" the AMC to use their lands in exchange for information on usage. Under this program, AMC leaders are issued WMNF Guide Cards and are asked to file trip...

    Grand Canyon

Here is some sobering information re: hiking in the Canyon. I did a R2R 2001 at the end of June. It was 95 at Indian Gardens at 9:00 a.m. I started at 4 reaching the S.Rim at 11. Missed the worst heat, but it was still HOT. Pick a trail with plenty of water -you can't drink too much. Use...

    Swan's Traverse

olde tymes 1936 WMG Tenth edition " times,.. are based on a speed of two mph, plus a half hour for every thousand feet ascended. ...The results will be reliable only on standard trails and they will probably fail on excessively steep grades...." I can check my first edition tomorrow as I do...

    Swan's Traverse

Mohamed, Ah, interesting. I went back to my 1936 & 1964 WMG's to recreate the Swan Traverse. It is either 13.55 or 13.9 miles using past or current milages. Vertical gain is ~ 8,650' with a total loss of ~7,925'. While the distance does not qualify as a "Death March", the difficulty should. I...

Mahoosuc Notch? 06/19/2004 (Chomp & Mike P so far)

I was out that way last weekend. We were going to do a one day traverse, but Mark's plane had a bomb scare. He was detained in TN for several hours & didn't make the start. We hiked form Grafton Notch to Goose Eye & back. The Notch was great fun both ways. A little ice & snow. The Arm was nasty...

Trip Proposal -- Wapack End to End

Wapack End to End Sorry I can't be there. I haven't done a E2E on the Wapack in 3-4 years. May 8 is the date of the Taconic Crest E2E. The TCT is 35 miles with 6-7000' elevation gain. There is a Wapack Double on either 4/24 or 4/25. Here's some info: Deb and Steve Pero are planning on...

    Hiked a 14'er?

The WMG for Co. imo is “Colorado’s Fourteeners” by, Gerry Roach, 2nd edition. We used it this summer to climb 9 14 ers. The directions are excellent. Maps are right on and easy to follow. Beware, the roads can be very bad. We had a Subaru wagon and were only able to go within a ½ mile of the...
