Saddleback, Basin, Haystack - hike? backpack? mix?

Thanks! This is also Northeast 111 for me. So I'm very happy.

Saddleback, Basin, Haystack - hike? backpack? mix?

Thanks again, guys. I hiked this on Friday in 10 1/2 hours, relaxed pace, Haystack, then Basin, then Saddleback. I only recall one final stretch going up Saddleback as a bit tough. Would have been harder coming down that way. Otherwise, quite nice.

    Allen - wet spots

Turns out the designated Opalescent crossing is a bit wet. Immediately next to the moorings of the former suspension bridge is an easy crossing.

Saddleback, Basin, Haystack - hike? backpack? mix?

I tried this today. Unfortunately I banged my knee on Allen yesterday. And the sole on my right boot was coming undone. So it looks like next week for 44, 45, and 46. I had been planning to hike Saddleback, then Basin, then Haystack to leave an easy exit. But the ranger strongly advised...

Santanoni, Panther, Couchsachraga - backpack or day hike?

Thanks for the input. It was very helpful and gave me nerve. I ended up going Saturday with a buddy who'd previously hiked it. We went up Santanoni Express and down from Panther. No sign of a rope on the express. And no need for one either. But it was in the upper 30s, in the dripping...

    Allen - wet spots

What's the story these days with Allen? Crossing Hudson? Lake Jimmy? Will I be able to do it in boots/gaiters or should I carry crocs? How's the rest of the route up? Can you refill water bottles along the way, including up Allen side trail?

Santanoni, Panther, Couchsachraga - backpack or day hike?

So what do people find easiest here - backpack one night? day hike? How does it compare in time/length/difficulty with the Dixes or with the Lower Great Range (Gothics, Armstrong, Upper and Lower Wolf Jaws), both of which I did as long day hikes? Any tips different from the book? Santanoni...

Saddleback, Basin, Haystack - hike? backpack? mix?

I am looking for suggestions to hike and/or backpack these three peaks in a reasonable way. I'm a pretty strong hiker, but intimidated by the 20-mile crazy hikes in the Adirondacks. For perspective, I did the five Dix peaks in a day hike. Another day, I hiked up Ore Bed, over Gothics...

    Acadia?

Penobscot and South Bubble For spectacular views, I second Penobscot. Near the summit, it feels like you can reach out and touch Jordan Pond with Pemetic and Cadillac Mountains framing the other side. And for the most of the walk, you are on exposed granite, with the Atlantic behind you. The...

    Need CAR for backcountry roads

I need to get a new car. I'm looking for something reliable, with good fuel economy and decent cargo space, and not too expensive. I'm most interested in a Honda Fit (highway MPG 33), but am open to other vehicles. My question is what vehicles people are using that have enough ground...

Haystack Road - When does it open?

Anyone remember when Haystack Road typically opens for camping?

    Bugs

Here's another spring question. When's the earliest people recall blackflies, etc... in the Whites and in Baxter SP? I'm thinking of scheduling a week off in mid-May. Think I'll get away unscathed?

Haystack Road - When does it open for camping?

I'm wondering if anyone remembers approximately when in the spring Haystack Road typically opens for trailhead access and camping? I tried the Forest Service site - http://www.fs.fed.us/r9/forests/white_mountain/recreation/roads_status.php - but that only lists what is opened now.
