    Worst "footing" in the Whites

ABSOLUTELY!!!!!! The worst thing is that on a topo the trail looks flat. Evil, evil trail.

$125 for a trinkle at Lincoln Woods.......

The way we Live Free in NH is by fining people from Mass, VT, NY, CT etc. My property taxes are high and i'd rather they didn't go much higher. I truly appreciate the fines paid. Thanks. Every little bit helps.

I almost got nailed by two skiers this weekend....

Well, this is the attitude of those yahoos on the trail. The two hikers had to jump into the woods to avoid being hit, and their complaints are met with one guy saying "don't be upset, it wasn't personal" and you saying it's fun. No mugging is personal, and no amount of education will overcome...

    Liberty/Flume Trailhead

I have had good luck at any number of trailheads over the years leaving a bike. I just go down 50 or a hundred yards from the trailhead and walk it into the woods out of sight and lock it to a tree. You don't have to go far, who walks into the woods when there is a trail to use? No one has found...

    Gender differential

I tend to disagree. Not that there aren't differences, but that the differences are general in nature. You can say that in general men and women are different, but we are talking about specific people (the posters) and it is wrong to make individual judgements about differences in individuals...

    Gender differential

I don't think there is an answer as to why. I used to love hiking and camping solo. Now I much prefer a hiking companion (though also still go solo sometimes), and dislike solo camping. So I took the opposite path you did. Whatever our process is, I doubt it is gender-related.

tying tents down - tautline hitch vs guyline tensioners

Good idea. Also, you don't have to untie it at all. Tie the tautline hitch through the tent tie-off, and just have a loop to attach to tent peg. The linem with the hitch, stays attached to teh tent. I have a tarp tent (no floor) and this allows me to re-tension without leaving the tent, just...

    bear traps in the woods?

I understand risk/benefit analysis. I understand the risks of having leg-hold traps in the woods. I just don't see the benefit to it. But in your above post, I now see that you are comparing the risk of encoutering a bear trap with the benefit of hiking. That wasn't clear in your original...

    bear traps in the woods?

The dog died. Hard to over-emphasize that Risk: someone's pet gets maimed or killed in front of their owner. Benefit: Ummm. Let me think about this one for a while...

    Mount Madison Rescue

The difference between an epic adventure and a tragedy is, if you survive, it was an epic adventure.

    Question on Northville-Lake Placid

Quite damp. I started the hike with him, but left him (and Dave, Greg and Justin) at the first bog north of Silver Lake Leanto. It was flooded and I foresaw ten days of that. I realized it would be more of a case of getting through the hike than enjoying it, so I dropped out. Trail was very...
