    Mt Washington Wedding

I saw this thread over on Digital Grin with some cool images from a recent wedding on the summit of Mt. Washington. After the ceremony, the bride and groom proceeded to hike down--she still in her wedding gown: http://www.dgrin.com/showthread.php?t=107108

    The Places In Between

Matt, You're talking about views from the bottom on a website dedicated to views from the top? BLASPHEMY! Joking aside, the way these places can give the sense of being wrapped in the forest is fantastic. The Fisherman's Trail in the Catskills and the Indian Pass trail in the 'Daks are a...

Photos that tell the story, not the view...

Both photos are really good storytellers. I share your attitude about hiking photos: I like a great scenic shot, but love a great shot of people interacting with an extreme environment. The framing of your first shot is not an orthodox, balanced composition. But it works for me because the...

    Fleece jacket options

I haven't for outdoor gear. But gear swaps and thrift shops have produced a few really good bargains.

    Fleece jacket options

I'd recommend a look at something like the Marmot Driclime Windshirt. It gives a lot of warmth and wind resistance for relatively little weight and $. http://marmot.com/fall_2007/mens/outerwear/wind/original_driclime_windshirt Once I got one of these, my basic fleece jackets sat in the...

    Snow Arch

It has a soft, poetic quality about it. Grumpy is right that it could be a great framing for a subject, such as a person or animal. But I understand your attraction to image as an invitation to go from "here" to "there", to explore the woods beyond the arch. Since that is your goal, I would...

    Experience with photo frames

David Pogue did a review of some of the frames in The New York Times today. http://www.nytimes.com/2008/02/07/technology/personaltech/07pogue.html?_r=1&oref=slogin

    Lonesome Lake Sunset...

Beautiful colors and tones going on in the image. I like how the alpinglow is reflected in the water. It helps tie top and bottom of the image together. Unfortunately, the white of the ice tends to cut off top from bottom, as others as observed. What's nice in your second image is how the...

    Last of the Autumn 'Bling'

Thanks for the critique (and Mongoose's similar point of view.) I was working the angles pretty hard with my 24mm lens to include all I wanted in the shot. A bit more breathing room would've been nice. I try not to blame my gear or have a gear fetish, but I can see a Sigma 10-20mm in my...

    Last of the Autumn 'Bling'

I shot plenty of horizontal images with more space around the rock. But these didn't allow including the lit leaves in the foreground, which really helped to balance the image. I would've liked a bit more space around the rock as well, but the 24mm is as wide as I have right now. On a small...

    Last of the Autumn 'Bling'

It is great when the elements come together so well for a shot. I was in my backyard for 2 1/2 hours that morning working a variety of shots. I saw the leaves on this rock when I first started shooting, but it was in shadow. The light finally started playing through the trees onto the rock...

    Last of the Autumn 'Bling'

Thanks for the critiques. I appreciate your willingness to pick at nits--helps me to see the image through other eyes.

    Last of the Autumn 'Bling'

I'll admit I hadn't looked at a crop at the top until you suggested it. I can see where a crop at the top would bring more focus to the rock and the foreground leaves. But I really like two things about the image as it is: 1) the vertical bars of the trees make a nice counterpoint to the...

    Last of the Autumn 'Bling'

Didn't go too far afield for this one--took it in my backyard Thanksgiving morning. Then the rain and wind came tearing in last night and fall is now all but gone.

    Technical printing question.

Did you take the pictures as jpegs? if so, you're not going to get any better data from conversion to tiff. If not, saving at a maximum quality jpeg setting of 10 (12 is overkill) will provide all the data the printer needs (as it has been explained to me.)
