    Cascade via the Cascade

Sounds good. It should be more solid now too. I wonder if Spencer climbed the waterfall or circumvented it. We plan to go via the waterfall :eek:so I am assuming we will need ice climbing gear - any feedback?

Has anyone done this in winter - if so I'd like to know more since I have an eye on this.

Giant Mtn rappel & wack 1/6-7

I dont want to put you off but - The reason Eagle is not done very often in the winter is that it faces south and gets too much sun and is prone to being out of condition so you really need a good cold spell and a cloudy day. Even then there is a risk of water flowing under the ice. I think...

Giant Mtn rappel & wack 1/6-7

From your photograph and also the one taken at the top it looks very much like a slide called the Question Mark. Which would also present quite a bushwhack and a steep section at the top. I think if I do it I might be tempted to do as you suggest and use 2 9mm ropes to get a longer reach and go...

    Dix and Macomb 6&7 January

Saturday - The alarm goes off at 4.15 am and its on the road to the Daks. Its raining its pouring and I’m snoring. We get to Elk Lake at 9.00 am (well 2 miles from it anyway) and we check our equipment and realize we forgot the Arc. The rain is torrential. The trail to Slide Brook Lean to is a...

    Winter sleeping bag

I have just read Chips reviews - and confess that they are terrible. Now I'll just have to sell the kids to buy a down bag. Oh well never mind I'll just do more research and not buy!

    Winter sleeping bag

North Face Tundra and Solarflare specs are here http://www.thenorthface.com/opencms/opencms/tnf/gear-shop-subcategory.jsp?category=73&site=CA Now I dont see why they would oversell the synthic tundra over their own much more expensive down equivilent. It appears to me that if longevity is the...

    Winter sleeping bag

I am going to purchase a winter bag in the -25C to -30C range and was certain I would need to be duying down. However research is showing me that Polarguard Delta is now as light as down and a similar size. Comparing a North Face Tundra (Polarguard) and Solarflare (down) the specs on size temp...

Winter hiking and removing ice balls on Labrador Paws???

LIke Klutz I use Petroleum Jelly on my Golden and Shepherds feet. It works well and is such an easy solution. However for long trips I think the boots may have better protection against cuts. I havnt figured out what works well yet. I will see if I can locate the boots recomended by Hillman.

Winter 5 day hike in Whites or Daks

Thanks for all your great ideas. you have all confirmed that it is a dodgy proposition to plan such a venture in the Whites - if you start to need a lot of heavy emergency gear over long routes you need plenty of time in reserve. I like the Dix and Marcy Dam ideas allthough I have pretty much...

Winter 5 day hike in Whites or Daks

I would like to plan a 5 day hut to hut or similar this March with skiis or snowshoes but am having a hard time finding a suitable route. The only open huts I know in the Whites appear to be too far distant and the Daks would require carrying tents. Any ideas? Jacko

    Whiteface via Lake Placid canoe

Prino, The trip is a whole day - the canoe rentals are open at 9.00 so you start on the lake at about 9.30 and get back to Lake Placid around 5 or 6 Yes you can see the slide very easily from that route and it shows its great length too.
