  • LOL, you crack me up my freind, thank you for your kind words and the comic relief. I'm glad you had your super safe jeans on when you hit the trail the other day.:p
Jason- Thanks! You don't know how much I envy you guys who get to hike with your children! Idid far to little of this with my boys growing up. I hope I have set a spark so I can make up for it now!
Thanks for the green. Did use the axe. I've switched from the Snow & Neally double bit to a True Temper Kelly Perfect that I restored and handled myself. The FS crews are big on axes (similar to the AMC).
Some of the stone work was especially fine on the waterbars. When the head of our group reached where your work began, she thought the digging had to do with bears looking for grub.
Hey Jason - Have you ever done Gile Mountain over in Norwich? We're thinking it would be a good hike for Gwynna coming off her surgery. Need something tame, no steep sections... What do you think?
    Thanks!

Thanks, Jason -- I have to confess, though, that these plants are now growing in my back yard; I planted them there last year in the hopes of doing just this: photographing them.
Jason, On Smarts I only hiked as far as Lambert Ridge, and there were no trail issues of note. I threw a few small blowdowns off the trail. BTW, I've been following the Spring Wildflowers thread, as I see you have been. I have only seen one lone colts foot flower so far; but am going to keep my eyes peeled over the next few weeks. Cheers, Elizabeth
Thanks for the invite Jason. Unfortunately, I'll be in Evans Notch with the Chatham Trails Association for trail work. How is the snow level in the upper valley? Was up there a few months ago for King Arthur Flour and Lou's (in Hanover).
I'm up at Mont-Sainte-Anne skiing for a week. Not sure about next weekend but it would be great to hike with you sometime.
    Cheers.
Hey Jason . . . well, regarding the Rossi BC-90 skis, I still consider myself pretty much of a novice at this kind of stuff, so please bear that in mind! Anyway, my reasons for opting to go with the BC-90's was based upon recommendations from a couple of friends + I had borrowed some Rossi BC-65's and could see that they were unsuitable for my off-trail pursuits + I could buy the Rossi BC-90's at EMS where I had a Gift Certificate!;):)

Rather than mount a 3-pin binding system on my BC-90's, I opted to go with a simple NNN Rossignol BC Magnum step-in style binding. This allows me to easily & quickly get into/out of my skis for those times when I want to negotiate a steep/tricky spot, and/or stash my skis then switch to snowshoes for a prolonged final approach that is too steep/rocky for my comfort-level on skis.

I'm told that you have better control for making turns if you have a beefier 3-pin binding and a good pair of boots. However, I was willing to sacrifice the maneuverability, and figure I can always have a beefier binding mounted at some later date if I so choose.

Like I indicated in my Trip Report, I really like the floatation that the rather wide BC-90 provides, and think it is at least as good as the floatation provided by my MSR Denali snowshoes.

Hopefully there is something here that you'll find useful. But, if not, please feel free to ask me any specific questions you might have.

Thank you for the "greenie" Jason. And also thanks again for posting those terrific links in your response to my report. Much appreciated!

Hi Jason, Thanks! I thought about that night a bit (3rd time back in winter), but mainly kept looking at that exit point that I spent a couple of hours trying to find. It always looks painfully obvious in good conditions!
    Happy holidays!
Thanks for the greenie Jason - and for all you've done for us during this trying year. Knowing people care keeps us going in the right direction.
Thanks for the greenie...to be honest it was a fast spelling error. But if I can come off as being brilliantly amusing that is good too.

Hey are you up for the CBC this year? Crawford Path opened up.
