i personally believe thinner people stay warmer (with the proper attire) in general. my first hand observations have included seeing people with some excess weight, get hypothermic with exertion. reason being, it's very cold old, they get really sweaty, they get soaked, they start to freeze...

there's an aspect of hiking that often gets overlooked on this forum. we talk a lot about the importance of experience and proper gear, but i rarely read about the aspect of fitness. in many ways, it's the most important. i think a lot of people forget that hiking is an athletic endeavor...

sorel caribous so snowshoeing in sorel caribous, which are leather and rubber (and waterproof) and rated to -40 degrees, are not worthy of a winter outing? i think i'd rather be stranded in these than plastics.

don't let down get wet like sleeping bear wrote, don't let the jacket get wet. same goes for sleeping bags. i hear all the time: "but down gets wet". don't let it get wet. use a vapor barrier inside and a cover/waterproof thin bivy, on the ouside. this should prevent the bag from ever...
