He might've benefited from using spikes, as you have referenced.

Accessible Peaks in Western Maine during the Wintertime

Burnt Hill (Mountain) is accessible from the Sugarloaf parking lot (about 500 yard walk to the left). Summit elevation is 2,884 (Peakery), so slightly under 3K. I hiked it this past summer, but never in winter.

    Candlemas Day (AKA Groundhog day)

Here's our Groundhog Day weekend. 3 feet of new snow in CB Highlands. I'll be heading up there for some excellent back-country snowshoeing. https://instantweatherinc.com/atlantic/forecast/2024/2/2/snow

    Fatality on Mt. Guyot

Without oxygen, no less. "On 20 August 1980, Reinhold did the climb all on his own to achieve the record for first solo summit of Everest. It took him three days to make the ascent from his base camp at 6,500 m (21,325 ft) and he did it without the use of bottled oxygen." From Guinness Book of...

    Fatality on Mt. Guyot

If I recall (from Ty's book), they didn't look at the Sunday morning forecast, which had changed significantly from the previous day. Not sure if this would've changed their decision, but it's possible.

Avalanche resulting in rescue Great Gulf.

Agreed. If you listen to the patrollers at the large ski resorts, they believe that helmetless skiers (like me) ski more cautiously than those wearing helmets, and they have seen an uptick in serious core (torso) injuries as helmet use became more prevalent.

    Current Maine 4K List

Did Saddleback and the Horn a few years ago. Views from the ridge are spectacular. A bit like Franconia, but trail is much less rugged.

Getting "significant" snow on Wednesday. We live at 262 ft. on the Atlantic coast. This is quite early for us.

Wolves in Maine (no mountain lions yet)

There are wolves in the Chic Chocs (Gaspe, Quebec), at least there were in 2012. This one was thought to have crossed to New Brunswick across the frozen Bay of Chaleur. https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/new-brunswick/wolf-killed-in-n-b-1st-in-century-1.1146960 Not directly adjacent to Maine, but...

    Mt Washington, Butterflies and Dandelions

We're encouraged not to mow in May, to allow bees to harvest from dandelions, etc. About 1/2 of our cleared land is left untouched in May, and we have noticed an uptick in the number of bees.

Solo hiking a badge of honor?

Agreed. My hikes are planned from a solo perspective, but I almost always end up encountering other hikers, as I usually stick to established trails.
