Blueberries are getting ripe in SW NH!!

North Pack blueberries bushes are loaded and about 1/3 ripe as of Monday. Local picking in the Weare area is even better. Probably the best year I've seen in the last 15yrs or so. :)

Leaving only footsteps - think again: 100 meter 'death zone' on either side of trails

I don't care for the term "denial" in this context. Or denier. It's loaded with innuendo that's unfair to all of us as a group. Denial suggests we've been shown conclusive proof that we're harming nature by walking in the woods, and we refuse to accept the fact. That's simply not the case...

Leaving only footsteps - think again: 100 meter 'death zone' on either side of trails

Deer are funny that way. Very seldom can you just walk up to one, although I did it a couple of times. Once, when trail running in a pine grove, I came within 40 ft of two deer browsing by a stone wall. They sensed me, but I stayed motionless and they eventually returned to feeding...

Leaving only footsteps - think again: 100 meter 'death zone' on either side of trails

I wasn't speaking of science in the abstract there. I was referring to the particular science the author was informed by, but didn't cite.

Leaving only footsteps - think again: 100 meter 'death zone' on either side of trails

Well, I would say that there's a grain of truth in that opinion, but Hikerbrian is much closer to the truth. Stating an opinion in the NYT on a film, or album, or ice cream flavor is one thing. Making a scientific claim in an "opinion piece" and not providing links or citations suggests a...

Leaving only footsteps - think again: 100 meter 'death zone' on either side of trails

As has been pointed out, the article does have serious flaws, but the premise and commentary lead to some interesting questions. - Are humans natural creatures? Why is our presence in the wild often characterized as making it unnatural? Have our technological advantages made us into creatures...

A recipe for a downright nasty weekend

Couldn't agree more. I took a look at my waistline a few weeks ago and it was enough to make me hit the local trails 5 days a week. Conditions have ranged from well-packed snow (beautiful for running w/ microspikes) to fresh powder ideal for snowshoes. I'm fortunate to be able to leave work at...

A tough winter "hike" - Denali solo in winter

Agreed, simply an outstanding accomplishment. Try, try again -- and eventually you may catch the break you need. The weather gods were smiling on him this year...

An interesting choice for winter clothing

Great one! Not as relevant, but my fave (from Annie Hall): ...a guy walks into a psychiatrist's office and says, hey doc, my brother's crazy! He thinks he's a chicken. Then the doc says, why don't you turn him in? Then the guy says, I would but I need the eggs. Sometimes we overlook the...

    I-93 crash

Weather Channel hyping the story? I'm seeing reports of 35-car pileup, which is bad enough. Hopefully no one is seriously injured.

This man was oblivious to New Hampshire's penal code. Happy New Year, everyone !

An interesting choice for winter clothing

The only nudity I've witnessed on the trail was purely accidental. A young woman didn't account for trail runners catching up to her nature break three feet off the trail. I went to Moonstone knowing full well it was a nude beach. Traveling the back woods and meeting or being followed by a...

Where, when, how to see moose in Vermont?

I've been up to a resort called Quimby Country a few times over the years. It's near the Averill Ponds and Forest Lake off Rt 114. It's pretty close to the Canadian border. Fifteen years ago, you could drive around that area and the moose would be practically standing on every corner -- very...

New Wind Farm in Berlin - Under the radar

Germany, a country leading the way in renewable energy, has 22,000 wind generators. Germany is about double the land area of New England--population is roughly 6x. These 22,000 wind generators provide 8% of their electricity. I'm holding out hope that we can find better solutions to our energy...

Snow in the forecast for the whites this weekend

These forecasters are calling for a colder than normal winter with snowfall somewhere around 150% of normal. They have a good track record, too. http://www.weatherbell.com/public-winter-14-15-forecast
