With a 1.5 year old at home and another on the way I haven't been able to get up to the high peaks as much as in years past, but when I have I've tried to get as much bang for my buck as the saying goes. I set aside this weekend a couple months ago for a 2-3 day trip with some friends who are...
I'll second the vote for Mr Mike's pizza. That is the perfect post-hike food, along with an ice cold coke.
I order a medium white garlic pizza with chicken and bacon on it. Eat half of it right there and have the other half after we drive two hours back to our camp in Old Forge. Delicious...
First off congratulations. I have a 14 month old and had the same types of questions last summer when he was a couple months old.
Basically we started out with one of those 'Baby Bjorn' or whatever they are called front carriers. We'd go on hikes of up to an hour or so - nothing major. The...
I haven't seen any cars there this winter. I don't think that approach gets much use so plan on breaking trail. Last winter we rented a house near the Garden and caught the trail from there that goes to Little Porter and Porter. We broke trail the entire way.
I recall some threads in the past on child carriers but searched all over for them without any luck.
I'm looking to get a child carrier over the winter. I have a six month old boy so he'll be a little over a year when I start using it next spring.
The latest Campmor catalogue has three Kelty...
Thank you very much for the information Beverly. It will be good to keep in mind for when we decide to cut over. Your experience sounds very similar to what we did years ago.

A few buddies and I are going to climb up Whiteface via the slide on Labor Day weekend - the big Whiteface Brook slide that comes up from Lake Placid.
We're going to start at Connery Pond and spot a car up in Wilmington so we can also hike over to Esther on our return.
I did this slide about...
My high peaks region post-hike routine:
1) Ice cold coke waiting for me in the car
2) Change into clean clothes for the drive down to camp in Old Forge
3) Quick hot shower
4) Cold beer and hot wings at the Red Dog Tavern in Inlet.
You can also camp for free at South Meadow if you are coming in real late and don't want to hike in. Might be easier than trying to find a site near Marcy Dam after dark and it is only short easy hike into Marcy Dam anyways the next morning.
There are plenty of sites at South Meadow to pitch...
There are three lean-to's between the Marcy Dam area and the trail that heads left up to Lake Arnold (I don't know the trail #'s).
The first lean-to is tough to find as it is quite a ways off the trail.
The second lean-to is just off the trail to the right.
The last lean-to (Avalanche Camp)...
Yep, salt potatoes are a central NY specialty I guess. If you are ever here or in Rochester try the cajun salt potatoes at the Dinosaur BBQ.
I also frequently carry a full loaf of chocolate chip bananna nut bread. But that doesn't last more than a day or so when everyone in the group gets...
Tuna now comes in pouches which is considerably lighter than bringing along a can of it. Mixing it up with a bag of rice is a good combo.
My specialty is to cook up a bag of salt potatoes the day before an overnight hike. I then cut them up in half or quarters, throw a bunch of garlic salt...
I didn't go to SU (I went to RIT up your way) but have lived here just about all my life and am a huge SU hoops fan.
Within the same year I finished my 46 in the fall and then was in New Orleans watching the Cuse win the championship in the spring.
Your friend will have a good time here. If...
Oyster -
I am going to check out tha map when I get home tonight because that sounds like a great loop on Sunday. The hike from Sawteeth to Pyramid and Gothics is AWESOME. Of course Saddleback, Basin, and Haystack aren't too shabby either.
When we go in later this summer we're planning to do...
