From Iroquois, I gather the herd path does not go over the Tooth but that one should instead turn right and contour it?
Did it last year with week-end packs. Easy path to follow from Iroquois to the Tooth. We then followed a path down from the Tooth, negotiated a few 6ft or so cliffs where...
How about...
from Elk Lake, Macomb slide to the top then South Dix- East Dix-South Dix- Hough and walk out via Lillian Brook?
Or keep going over to Dix for an all out day of fun in the Dixes? (did just that a few weeks ago)

We were planning to use it as a trailhead but it was marked "temporarly closed" so we ended up starting from the loj.
Is it:
a) always closed in winter
b) not maintained but not closed with some "special circumstance" making it temporarly closed?

Was doing the trap dyke on Sunday. At some point we might have been 200' up we heard a chopper flying pretty fast over Avalanche Lake... far below us!
Just wondering if was related to some emergency, if it is routine or if it probably was someone just having fun.
Altough if it had gone by a...

Hope you are not comparing with Mt Logan incident.
The only way to be safe from storms and accidents in a high altitude environment like on Mt. Logan is not to climb at all... they were caught by a second storm on their way down after turning around at 18000feet before reaching the summit...
Hum... I don't agree, one should rather practice the ability to look down and not panic ! Kind of necessary when:
- abseiling
- downclimbing
- belaying your second from above
- looking where to put your feet to work out a move
- watch your single piece of pro walk out of the crack and fall to...
Granted there are some great lost trails but others were abandonned for reasons (erosion, property lines, etc.).
One should certainly check on that before putting the effort into reopening a lost trail.
IMHO the risk of overhydrating is almost insignificant compared to the risk of underhydrating. Any kind of snacks (or electrolyte replacement drink) will do the trick.
Then again, a short term slight dehydration is not that big of a concern, biggest concerned is usually on multiday trips...
tought Iceline was in "little Yoho valley", there is one area on that trail were people went Cairn-crazy ! Nice trail but one had to watch for the "wandering rock" at Stanley-Mitchell Hut (a large rock that has a little plaque on it commemorating its travels... by being carried in backpacks all...
Wondering what kind of conditions I could expect mid-end April in the Catskills (Hunter DP/Becker and Burroughs Range traverse) ?
I would think no need for snowshoes and crampons and not as much mud as the Dacks but have never been down there...
Thanks
