Hi all, I would like to hit Old Speck in the next few weeks. My question is what is the access from Grafton Notch in winter conditions? Is highway 26 well maintained? and what is parking like at the Old Speck trailhead in winter? Any beta would be helpful! Thanks, Ralph

That is sure nice but I would think the mileage on that trip to be excessive for a beginner on thier first backpack, certainly not a gentle introduction. Also the ascent of Indianhead is very steep on the east side.

Blackhead may be a good option for you. Start at the end of Big Hollow road (a nice scenic drive in) I will refer to the NY/NJ trail conference map which I hope you would have one, they are the best maps for this region. take the Black Dome Range trail and stay left to continue on the Batavia...

The one thing that I am trying to figure out is this Traveler loop. On the map I have, the North Traveler and Traveler mountains are not connected by a trail. This, I am assuming is the loop? is there a new trail built there or is it a bushwack or ridgewalk or what? If so what direction is good...
