LL Bean annual winter sale, nice deals

At least the sales can make up for their inflated prices, which I will not pay anymore. I have been a Beans' shopper for years, and have witnessed their decline in quality and their increase in pricing. It used to be commonplace for their items to be made here, now mostly everything is...

24 Peaks in 6 hiking day in the White

May I ask a question here? When you guys say you do all these peaks on your hikes, do you mean that you hiked each mountain individually or do you climb one and then stay up high and hike the ridge trails to the next summit? For example, if you are hikng Lafeyette from the bottom and then...

    A Poll about Poles

I always use my Leki poles, ever time I am out. I am 47 years old and my knees do hurt at times. The other great benefit with using poles is that you get a better all around workout because you are using your arm muscles too when you transfer weight to the poles. Its a win win for me.

Mt Grace on the M&M trail

Hi, I was wondering if anyone has hiked this mountain in North Central MA before? I have been doing parts of the Holyoke Range lately and would like to hike more of the M&M trail. It's really a nice trail that isn't too far for me to drive to. If someone has done this section, let me know how it...

    Mt Greylock

I was hiking up there last weekend. Just up Mt Williams and down the farm trail back to the gate on Notch Road. The gate was locked shut already. I spoke with a DCR employee and he said their was a moose on the road, but I didn't get to see him. take care, Eric

Mount Greylock Road to be closed in 2007

Peak bgr, Its up to you. Their are many choices. The AT can be used from the north or the south. The Hopper trail climbs up from the west, and the most difficult but shortest routes are from the east due to the shape of the mountain. I have done the Bellows Pipe trail a couple of times. This...

Mount Greylock Road to be closed in 2007

I agree. Why aren't they doing Rockwell Road first and then Notch Road second. Rockwell Road is in horrible condition. At least the mountain would still be open on the north side this way. I'm gonna miss going up there. Oh well, what can you do?

    Soft shell-hard shell

Michael, Thanks for the lesson in the materials. I am kinda new to this stuff, so when I read the first part of your post, I wanted to say that a lot of newer members can benefit from some of this rehashing info. I know that I can go and search, but it is still helpful to see the new threads...

    Hikes in Mass.?

I just did Stony Ledge just west of Mt Greylock last week. What a terrific hike this was. Not all that far and the views toward Greylock across the Hopper are awesome. Park on Roaring Brook road off of rte 7 in New Ashford and go up the Stony Ledge trail. You can make a nice loop hike by...

Anyone familiar with Saddle Ball Mt. in MA?

I have hiked this area before. I have taken the AT from the rte.8 crossing up to the top of Saddle Ball Mt. My question pertains to parking. The time I did this, I parked my car at a gas station which is a few tenths of a mile south of the AT crossing rte.8. I then walked the road to the trail...

not sure where to go Saturday

Just an off topic question if you don't mind. Why do you misspell nearly every word? If it is meant to be a joke, I simpy don't get it, and I am very simple. Is it internet humor? Please explain, and I don't mean to be a smartass about it. Thanks, Eric from Moderator: Actually, Rick, has a...

    Winter hiking question

Thank you all very much for taking the time to type out you responses to me. I appreciate it. I am from MA and the most I can see myself doing is Mt Greylock, which is where I go most of the time. I am only about two hours from there. I usually hit it a couple of times in the fall, but was...

    Winter hiking question

Hi, people I have been thinking about maybe trying some winter hiking this season, something that I have never done before. Aside from the obvious cold weather stuff, are crampons the usual add-on for your boots? Is the idea of the crampon to only use them in a slippery situation and be able to...
