  • Hello-That day I signed the register and then did an about face and started up the mountain. We were going to try for the old woods road but decided to shorten the distance as much as possible. We made it up to Eagle but not Big Indian. Truly a day to remember.
I did Balsam Cap via the High Point parking area yesterday. Lots of wet snow but that route there is no steep climbs. That was 35 of 35 for my winter peaks and it was a fight! Lists are fun to do but I am glad it's over and I can revisit the peaks I enjoy the most.
I hope you do not wear your headgear in the woods. Once at a trail register somewhere I saw it written to wear orange during hunting season and not to wear Viking helmets! Sounds like good advice to me. Take care-Bob.
Hey Bob, cool, was wondering if you guys made it. didn't notice larger sized snowshoes when we followed your tracks to the register.. Probably noticed our spot that we shoveled out in the actual trailhead parking when you left too :)

The direct route to Eagle is nice and avoids the bump-that-doesn't-count known as Haynes. if you also go further down the trail just before the official trail crosses the brook, (in fact, right by a brown arrow sign that says "trail", there is an old woods road that that you can follow that eventually brings you towards the Haynes/Eagle col but dies out well before the ridge, so you just keep going til you run into the trail. I've done that before and is a nice open woods 'whack. It's pretty cool the past two weekends with this snow, haven't seen this snow down here in a long time! I think there is more snow now in the catskills than in the ADKs...
