I grew up in Berlin,CT and occasionally heard stories about the Leather Man.He would "knock tin" or repair things in exchange for a meal and to spend a night in somebody's barn.My parents had pictures of him around Berlin that had been handed down over the years...

Remember there's a lot of places that don't get too much sun this time of year on MDI.We were up there 2 years ago in tshirts on top and postholing in very wet snow below treeline that was better than knee-deep in places.I would think the sames rules apply up in Cutler. And if all else fails...

just up there last weekend-trailheads are marked but the signs are set back from the road a little and could be easy to miss if nobody is parked nearby

figure at least an hour down to stonington.deer isle has some nice walks around an old granite quarry and through a "coastal fog forest".

We've stayed at Bass Harbor,which has tent sites across the road from the main campground.It's down on the far corner of the island and fairly quiet.Smuggler's Den is closer and if you can get a site around the field the spacing isn't too bad.Both places are on the shuttle route.

Planning a trip around Bay of Fundy this summer.Ferry from St.John to Digby and up around.Any suggestions for hikes,campgrounds etc. greatly appreciated.

acadia check out bass harbor campground.island explorer runs by there.take a 10 minute walk around the corner to watch sunset at bass harbor light and for a coupla dollars more.........plenty of hot water after a day of hiking. http://www.exploreacadia.com/
