Waumbek Can Wait. November 11, 2010

Sharon and I turned around on Waumbek the first time as well. Same kind of situation, too. She just wasn't feeling it and wouldn't admit it. I knew something was wrong because she usually hikes faster than I do and this day she was trailing behind. I finally told her I was turning back and she...

Otis makes lots of new friends on Moosilauke

Our Lab Otis and I got to hike alone Saturday. We were planning to hike Sunday, but our friend and co-owner wanted to give him some vaccinations and an eye exam then, so Saturday morning we were off early. As usual he slept comfortably in the back of the car while I drove. When we arrived at...

In the Market for a New Water Bladder?

16mm thick?? Both of the linked websites tout the 16mm thick polyurethane material!! A back of the envelope calculation tells me that a 3 liter bladder that thick would weigh about 5 pounds empty, without the hose. Not a selling point for me.

    Moose on Mt. Washington

I am completely amazed. Most of us are lucky to catch a glimpse of these amazing creatures as we crash through the forest, but you are able to stop and allow them to relax and live their normal moose lives in front of your lens. Thank you for sharing.

    Saddleback and the Horn 8/6/10

I haven’t posted any TR’s in a while but we’ve still been hiking. This trip merits a report for a couple of reasons. 1. We were accompanying our friend Sue for her NE67 finish. 2. The day was spectacular and gave us a reminder to always be prepared. Sue called us because she wanted to finish...

    Overnight at Flat Mountain Pond...

Amazing photos as usual I love to see the way you capture the interplay of morning light, mist, and water.

    Where do Wind Farms belong?

Wind power in the land of Don Quixote I won't even attempt to wade into the discussion of where/whether or when wind turbines belong in New England, but fate (in the form of my boss) has dropped me in the middle of a 500 turbine wind power development in La Muela Spain for a couple of weeks...

    Sandwich Mountain 5/16/10

What a difference a week makes! Great photos! Looks like you caught a great day and everyone (especially Dooly) made the best of it. We went up Sandwich on the 9th up the Sandwich Mountain Trail in freshly fallen snow. Funny thing about those Labs. They're pretty social creatures, willing and...

5/15/10 Blowdown Extravaganza on Kedron Flume Trail

How Deep is the snow? Hi Grouseking I agree that the view to Mount Washington from Mt Field is impressive. I was there August of 08 and the summit cleared for a little while as I descended. I did punch though the snow a couple of times so I got a pretty good idea of depth. One one memorable...

5-15-10 Mazel tov! On Mt Israel...and visc

Cool photos and great report Great photos Grouseking! I wish we had a few more openings in the clouds yesterday like you did. I share your (knee) pain. You'll get used to the poles and you'll rely on them more and more. They do take a tremendous amount of pressure off your knees especially...

5/15/10 Blowdown Extravaganza on Kedron Flume Trail

This was one of the rare days I've hiked without Sharon. Our friends Jay and Wendy wanted to get these mountains for their 48 list, but Sharon couldn't come, so just Otis and I went to accompany them and help with a car spot. For the second week in a row we drove north from a sunny Kingston...

    Sandwich Mountain on Mothers Day

Hiking with you, Judy, and Emma would be fun I'm sure Otis, Sharon, and I would enjoy that. Drop me a line sometime when you're planning to go out. Thanks to you and W7xman (and all the other true photographers on the site) I'm starting to slow down and observe the flowers. Trillium was...

    Sandwich Mountain on Mothers Day

Sandwich Mountain 5/9/10 Mothers Day didn't start so well. Sharon was cleaning up after the dogs when I got out of bed. It got better when I asked whether she still wanted to try a Mothers Day hike even though the weather forecast wasn't so hot. She answered that she didn't get up that early...

Highpoint: Rhode Island. April 20, 2010

When is a hike not a hike? Reminds me of my training hikes during the week in Connecticut. A friend chastised me about a picture I took showing my sneakers and blue jeans. I reminded him that I was barely out of sight of a house at any time.
