Good locations to reflect high NH peaks in water

Excellent shots, Jim. You've been without a doubt my favorite landscape photographer since I ran across some of your shots a few years ago. If you ever put out a book like Monkman did, I'd definitely buy it. Of course, I also find your work terribly depressing because it puts mine to such...

    HDR tips, please!

I have to agree with the general sentiment expressed thus far about HDR. It's neat, but it rarely produces a natural effect without a tremendous amount of tweaking (and even then the effect is rarely better than what you'd get with a grad ND.) Of course, I think that this is generally the case...

Roads condition: Alander, Frissell, & Brace - MA / CT /NY

The stove is still there? I thought the DCR got rid of it a few years ago. I was up there in August, but didn't stick my head in. I noticed that somebody hauled a ladder up at some point since I was last there, though. I don't imagine that was a fun carry, but I noted that the roof looked it be...

    2010 Fall Foliage thread

From tonight: I missed the actual sunset by about two minutes, so I didn't get any good light. Still, it was a good night to be out.

In need of wide boots, recomendations please?

I was going to come in here and post "anything but Asolo," but I guess you already know that. :p I love mine... But Italians appear to have really narrow feet. I do not. Mine have thankfully stretched a bit without busting any seams.

I definitely don't recall seeing any signage. I imagine it was removed in the '90s. It's possible that it's still there and I just never noticed, though. I'd come in from the north for both. East St is paved until the vicinity of the forest HQ. The northern approach is definitely in better shape...

Definitely. That's how I make sure I come back with the shot. :p

Ah. OK, I'm aware of that mountain. I was just wondering if maybe you had an interesting old USGS quad of the plateau that I'd missed. :p Sure thing. I can't help you with that bit of the plan, though. None of my maps show a trail ever having been on that side of the mountain, and I've...

Yup. That trail no longer exists. The area is posted. I can tell you for a fact that the remains of the trail are heavily posted because I ran across it once a couple of years ago. However, like MichealJ's link suggests, TNC now manages an awful lot of land on the plateau. The land is...

Thanks. That's why I pack a 12mm lens. :p The hyperfocal distance becomes awfully close when shooting that wide. If you want the exposure: 12mm, 0.5sec @ f/13 I use a crop body, so that's about 15 or 16mm on full frame, I believe.

East street is blocked at the CT state line every winter. I haven't been out that way in a while, but last I saw it wasn't blocked (that usually happens around November.) It doesn't really matter, though--the better route is to just take 41 to the north end of the plateau and follow East St...

    2010 Fall Foliage thread

Ah. I got rid of my grad NDs. I'm lazy and find it much easier to just bracket the shot +/- a stop or two than dig around in my pack for another filter. :p You did a good job with it. That exposure was nailed. I've shot in similar conditions and haven't managed to pull it off that well. It...

    2010 Fall Foliage thread

Here are a few more from yesterday that I just processed. Hopefully the double post doesn't annoy anyone. Same composition from last week, but with significantly lower water: I still have a pano to stitch and process... but I'm far too lazy to do that at the moment. :p

Thanks. I'm actually not that happy with it... the highlights are a bit blown. It's easier to see full size. I like your first one. That's a lot of dynamic range. Is it a two exposure blend? A few I shot yesterday: Looks like the color will be around for another week or so...

Moose sighting in SE NY - And it came from CT?!

It's a rail trail. Most of it is fairly unremarkable, but it goes by Bolton Notch, which is pretty nice (there are some small caves if you want to poke around near the top.) I believe it also links up with the Shenipsit Trail near Valley Falls (and if it doesn't directly, it's easy enough to...
