    Will do, thanks.

    Garmin 62S accuracy?

Hmm Doug, I'm not sure I understand your comment. If I walk a straight mile on flat ground, I presume I have walked a mile, no matter how I measure it. What do you mean by fractal? I can see point to point on a map being different from actual distance walked if there are curves on the trail...

    Garmin 62s

I have a Garmin GPSmap76CSx which I think is somewhat similar to the 60 series. I got free 24k scale maps from www.gpsdepot.com, also a great site to ask questions. I asked a bunch and got help from some very nice members.

    Rescues This Weekend?

When I lived on Oahu (Hawaii), it was fairly easy to tell the tourists from the locals. At the two popular bodysurfing beaches, the locals all had fins, but few of the tourists did. Those were the ones the lifeguards had to warn off or wind up pulling out of the water on a big day.

    Rescues This Weekend?

I'm just curious as to whether the obviously unprepared take your advice. I've read accounts of people trying to offer advice and been told in no uncertain terms to mind their own business. I imagine it's not too hard for you all to tell who's prepared and who's not by looking at their clothes...

    Replacing my GPS

Hey, I have those. I got such a good deal on the 76CSx that it would be hard to part with it, but maybe a good deal on the Oregon would be tempting. I do have mitts, but gloves as well. I suppose I could try it out at REI before deciding.

    Replacing my GPS

Thanks Doug, I did see some good reviews, as well as some of the complaints. All things considered, I may just stick with what I've got for now until I figure out which of the newer ones are really that much better.

    Replacing my GPS

Thanks. I'm not set on one yet. A member on another site suggested the Colorado, the predecessor of the Oregon, for cold weather so I'm going to check that one out as well.

    Replacing my GPS

I've read that the screen on the Oregon series is not only bigger, but much clearer than the 64, so it looks like it's a choice of which is more important, cold weather performance or the bigger touch screen. A trip to the store seems like the next step to do a side by side comparison if...

    Replacing my GPS

I'm looking at some videos on YouTube and found some sites that compare the different models. I will be using this in winter, and more than one mentions that touch screens aren't the best for winter so maybe the touch screen isn't such a good idea. Also it looks like the Oregon 600 is in my...

    Replacing my GPS

I have a Garmin GPSMap76CSx. I got a great deal on it a few years ago. However, I'm considering looking for a replacement that is smaller and lighter. But with similar features. I don't need the marine features on this one, just everything else. I would like a bigger screen. I don't use mine...

Building a sled to pull winter camping gear

I made one a few years ago using a kid's sled. It was too tippy because the bottom was rounded, so I would recommend using a Paris Expedition with a flat bottom. I used pvc poles about 6 ft long. For hardware, I used eye bolts on the sled and on caps on the end of the poles. I used small locking...

    missing hiker - Lancaster, NH

Just read the Boston Globe story. Sad but at the same time, I have taken a few risks hiking and doing other things, but I can't imagine starting out into those conditions regardless of how skilled or equipped you are. Not sure what she was trying to prove to herself. None of that trip sounds...

Fires at backcountry campsites in the 90's....

Totally off topic, but I remember as a kid (back in the early 60's) going to Yosemite where they had a "firefall" which was a huge bonfire that they would build on the South Rim, if I remember right. Once the embers burned down, they'd push the whole thing over the cliff with a tractor with a...
