    Hurricane from the east

Can anybody give me any beta on Hurricane from the east? My guidebook is the 11th edition and indicates that you can drive quite a ways in (to within 0.5 mi of the old observer's cabin), thus reducing the hike to 1.5 miles and 1500' gain. Is it still possible to drive this far in or has the road...

    Slides

Coupla things... Some folks were posting re:basin and dix slides...I was in to ski the north slides on Dix one month ago and they were a blasted mix of bulletproof ice bulges, 1/2 - 12 inches of powder atop bare rock, and just plain bare rock. We thought they 'looked fine' from afar too, but...

    Upperworks and/or Santanoni trails

...was wondering if anybody has been up in this neck of the woods in the last couple of days. Tomorrow, I was thinking of heading into the Santanonis (via Bradley Pond) or up Macnaughton via Preston Pond) and using skis for the trail portion of either. But a hike around Camels Hump in VT today...

torngat thoughts Thanks everyone for your input! It's got me more and more curious about these distant mountains and the native communities that live nearby. And then there's always Baffin and Ellsmere Islands...endless country to the north. Funny though how it'd probably cost just as much to...

    Torngat Mountains

Anybody out there been to the Torngats? I noticed that Papa Bear has a neat picture of Mt. Caubvick, the highest peak in the Torngats, as his avatar. Have you been there Papa Bear? If so, is that an alpine pond at the base of that snowy bowl? and what time of year was it? I'd be interested in...

    Frozen stove

freeze ups I was using my Whisperlite camping up Ermine Brook this past three-day weekend, both evening and at night. Temperatures dropped to between -10 and -20 overnight, my stove just hung out in the cold and snow, and it never showed any problems. It started up as expected every time...

Who would do an overnighter in these temperatures?

brrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr... Funny you should ask! Desperately in need of some solo time after a hellish work week, I headed out this past Friday night....up to lost Pond and the Nun-da-ga-o. Previously, I've camped at -30 F, and man was that cold. I didn't bring a thermometer along, but I had...
