RMC Sign Auction - Starting soon

I was wondering what happened to their auction back prior to the holidays. Looks like they are shaking it up a bit. Bidding starts on April 14th but you can preview them now. It includes a couple of framed maps. They look to be the limited editions they did for a few years which were numbered...

Attacked by a wind "devil" today

I encountered a weird, localized weather phenomenon today. I was on South Moat on the summit eating lunch. For those not familiar with South Moat the summit is a bit of a depressed bowl with a wall of upthrust rock to the east and a large upthrust boulder to the west. In between is a depressed...

Backup Link to Bretton Woods Webcams

The Obs used to have West view webcam but it disappeared a few years ago. It was handy to get an idea of upslope cloud formation to the west. The Bretton Woods cam is almost as good to view upslope cloud formation.

Backup Link to Bretton Woods Webcams

I find that the Bretton Woods webcam on the Obs site is a quite handy view of the west side of Mt Washington. It does seem to "lock up" on occasion displaying a night view. A backup from a slightly different angle is located here https://www.brettonwoods.com/activities/photos_and_cams/live_cams

Balsams Update - Go Big or Go home

BTW, The record of Decision is on the Coos County Website. https://www.cooscountynh.us/sites/g/files/vyhlif4291/f/pages/balsams_ski_area_nod_signed.pdf If the "devil is in the details", these are the details. There is a clause that they can run the ski area without the hotel by setting up...

Balsams Update - Go Big or Go home

The other question comes to mind is if the Balsams does get reopened, will it affiliate with the large ski conglomerates that share intermountain passes? That appears to be where the ski industry has evolved to. Coincidentally, Les Otten's ASC (American Ski Company) that crashed and burnt was a...

Balsams Update - Go Big or Go home

My guess is timing wise, getting the final permits for the hotel and then building a brand new hotel, district heating system and a 12.3 mile long pipe from the Androscoggin to the ski area along with the ski area is going to take awhile which will allow them to develop the rest of the...

    Less People Hiking?

My observations were compared to the same time of year the two last years so they were all during shoulder season.

    Less People Hiking?

IMO, the trails will always get mobbed on holiday weekends and folks who want less traffic should know to avoid them or just take left or a right turn off the trail and bushwhack on those weekends. What I was commenting on was the off peak usage seems to have shifted. The current NOAA 30 day...

    Less People Hiking?

I am definitely not representing it as "cliff" in usage, at best I would hope for a plateau or maybe the start of a downward trend.

Balsams Update - Go Big or Go home

I have to say, the Balsams has been saying all along that the resort will be four season. There is steady demand for corporate retreats off season if the activities are there. They already have a golf course, I think I heard mention of revamping and reopening the cross country ski trails. They...

    Less People Hiking?

Maybe its my imagination but its looking to me like fewer people are out there at least at the places I drive by. During the two Covid winters the local trails in Randolph were getting broken out and used during the week and weekends. I would drive by these local trailheads and there always a...

Balsams Update - Go Big or Go home

If they build it with private money and they have a market that is great. It will really help Colebrook and the RT 3 corridor. They area is a designated Opportunity Zone so they should have private investors interested in participating Investors can defer capital gains on earnings that have...

Balsams Update - Go Big or Go home

I do because there is school nearby but when they are not in session that farm stand and the Milan Store traffic can be a bear ;).

Balsams Update - Go Big or Go home

Disregarding "locals", my assumption is that the typical day tripper is coming from the more prosperous south or if the exchange rates are good from the Montreal and possibly eastern townships. Jay Peak is an easy Interstate ride from the north via Autoroute 10 then south on Autoroute 55 to the...

    Last day of winter today

It is the Spring Solstice today at 5:24 PM. It was definitely an odd one from a weather perspective with it not really looking like winter until about 3 weeks ago. Looking at the snow conditions up in my area the snow from the most recent storm is going away rapidly. A couple days of sun and...

Balsams Update - Go Big or Go home

Thanks for the link. My guess is DOT like many others did not place a high priority on requests by the Balsams group. The project has lost a lot of credibility over the years in the area with many, and with limited resources my guess is the DOT just set the priority low to respond to the latest...

Hope for delaying Dementia among Outdoor Curmudgeons

Of course, probably the biggest thing going for outdoor people is continued outdoor activity. Yes there are genetic and potential unknown environmental issues that everyone may have, but most things I have read is continued daily routine physical activity is key to delaying a whole host of old...
