Looking for backcountry camping opportunity near waterfalls.

Best to get a copy of the NY/NJ Trail Conference maps, they show all the trails and viewpoints. There's not a lot of extended ridge walking like there is farther north in the Whites, but there are some nice hikes. Avoid the area around the Visitor's Center parking on Seven Lakes Drive on...

Looking for backcountry camping opportunity near waterfalls.

I can't think of any significant waterfalls, but there's lots of nice hiking in Harriman State Park, less than an hour from Manhattan. Not terribly remote, but you can avoid the crowds if you avoid the more popular areas.

This car has climbed Mt Washington

Kind of like the "South of the Border" stickers you used to see everywhere on cars that stopped at that tourist trap on the way to Florida. I think they used to slap them on every car in the parking lot without asking the owner, though. When we hiked Mt Washington around 15 years ago my...

    Another Tick Disease Is Here

I had babesiosis and Lyme at the same time a few years ago. Wasn't fun, but neither is covering head to toe in hot weather, avoiding underbrush, or bathing in chemicals. I'll take my chances.

The changing innovations of what we do for fun

I do a lot of hiking in Harriman as we have a cabin in the area, and the increase in numbers starting with covid (when NYC people couldn't reach their usual destinations) is appalling. 10 years ago you could usually find space in a lean-to, now it's not unusual to see 25 or more tents pitched...

The changing innovations of what we do for fun

Of course... but sometimes terrain or the desire to explore pushes you in a direction you didn't intend.

The changing innovations of what we do for fun

The first big improvement was ditching the old single wall pup tent for a Goretex bivy sack (and tarp when necessary). GPS was second... I've done my share of off-trail navigation with just a map and compass, but when you come out on the trail it can be real convenient knowing whether to turn...

    EMS Sold -- Again

Campmor is great, I was in there for a new pair of boots last month. It's only about a half hour from our cabin, but ya gotta remember that in that part of NJ everything is closed on Sundays. It was amusing when EMS opened a big store right next door to Campmor... it lasted about a year IIRC...

Blueberry Mountain from Marcy Field... water?

I'll answer my own question, yes, the stream isn't exactly roaring but there is water. It was a good trip.

Blueberry Mountain from Marcy Field... water?

Anybody been up this trail recently? Is the stream along the lower part of the trail is a reliable source of water given the dry summer we've had? I'm packing for this weekend and trying to gauge how many water bottles I need to bring.

Views from Prospect, Fitch, or Williams?

If you mean where did I start, Chester, CT. It's a Hatz CB-1 biplane, built in 1987. Slow, it only cruises around 75-80mph, but it's a lot more fun than driving.

Views from Prospect, Fitch, or Williams?

I finally did this trip. Flew up to North Adams on Saturday morning arriving around noon (I got a late start, finally reached the AT trailhead around 1:30), went up Prospect (quite the uphill slog, switchback city) and down to Wilbur's Clearing. Lots of other hikers and campers, not a bad...

Views from Prospect, Fitch, or Williams?

Ok, thanks. Sounds like heading towards Williams makes sense and return via old summit road, or go farther south toward Fitch/Greylock if I have time. Really, this is just a short shakedown trip to see how all the gear packs in the plane (an old open cockpit biplane) before a longer trip to...

Views from Prospect, Fitch, or Williams?

I was intending to hike Greylock from the North Adams airport with an overnight, but it doesn't look like I'll have the time. So I'm looking at alternates... which one of those three would be the most interesting as an afternoon dayhike from Wilburs clearing? The plan is to stash my pack near...

    Fount: Digital camera in Harriman

Long shot, but I found a digital camera yesterday in Harriman State Park while looking for mushrooms. It was a short distance off an unmarked trail (old woods road), down a small cliff from an old unofficial campsite. Somewhat beat up but functional (after charging the battery), it appears to...

    New EMS Order Policy

What can you say about a company that decided to built a store right next to Campmor? Well, Campmor is still there but that EMS store didn't last long...

    Greylock camping

Thanks, that's the page I couldn't find, I was hopeful when I saw that some Mass campgrounds were open. Disappointing. That's Massachusetts for you. "There is no legal place to spend the night along the AT in Massachusetts."

    Greylock camping

Does anybody know what the status is of camping along the AT and/or the leantos in Greylock reservation amid the covid mess? I can't seem to find a straight answer on any mass gov website. I was hoping to do an overnighter from North Adams this weekend. Campsite recommendations welcomed...

Marcy Field to Blueberry - Porter

Planning to do Blueberry, Porter, and maybe Cascade from the airfield this year. Question: are there any good places to camp near the stream crossing just inside the state land? The plan is to fly in to the airfield in the afternoon, camp in that area, then day hike the peaks and return to...

    Trailheads near small airports?

Looks like about 7 miles from the AT trailhead, unless there's something closer I'm not seeing. At Twin Mt. it looks the Tuttle trail connecting to the Sugarloaf trail is pretty close. Franconia, I don't see the Coppermine trail but I see the Tucker Brook trail pretty close. Near Falls...
