    2024: Leas snow than normal

Here’s another point of view to brighten your day…. The Planet is Fine according to this guy! And it will shake us off like a bad case of fleas.

    Homemade Insulated Gaiters Or Overboots

When you have some $$ to burn you might want to take a look at this product. Back in the day it was difficult to keep the toes of super gators glued to boots when crampons were used.

Search ongoing for 22-year-old missing hiker

I’ve never seen a litter suspension system like the one shown here. It transfers some of the patients weight to a shoulder suspension frame worn by a pair of litter bearers. In the pic 4 folks are managing the carry rather than 6 or 8. Has this system ever been used in the Whites?

Anything Like this in the Whites/ADKs (long-ish video)

In Baxter Chimney Pond comes to mind but I doubt there is any data to support it. I suppose any mountain tarn might exhibit similar but less extreme phenomena.

    Off Trail Fatal on Kinsman

Like Mike Tyson sagely observed: “Everybody’s got a plan until they get punched in the mouth.” Accidents provide us that punch. Glad you recovered and are still out there. Wear that lid proudly! PS. When we did the Knife Edge in Winter we all wore helmets.

    A boy and his dog….

Here’s a strange one: this tramper arrived at the Obs in bad wx and …. Well, ya got to read it to believe it. Is it me or is the world getting more weird?

    Off Trail Fatal on Kinsman

Bicycle and climbing helmets are rather primitive in that most use a hard shell and strap suspension system. Some ski helmets and all motorcycle helmets forgo strap suspension and enclose your skull in a layer of foam, and that is where the aging failure occurs. Over time the foam drys out and...

    Off Trail Fatal on Kinsman

Local guy checking out a backcountry glade. Looks like more ice than his micro spikes could safety handle. Very unfortunate and so early in the winter season.

AT trail damage from Hurricane Helene

Work I’ve done in the Whites was organized and supervised by the Forest Service, and we worked alongside professional staff. They were just thankful to get extra hands to help with the heavy ice damage.

AT trail damage from Hurricane Helene

The upside of this is that it provides a great opportunity to do some volunteer trail clearing and reconstruction.

    Sierras Worst Nightmare!

Depending on one’s insurance, an ambulance transport can be an expensive ride, like thousands of dollars. And you end up at an ER where more money is charged. Some folks just can’t afford it. I think I read this person did have a HikeSafe card, so that shows some level of responsibility.

Long abandoned route of the Osseo Trail from Lincoln NH

Haven’t done it in years, but I recall it as a very fun way to do Flume, from the back side no less.

Foam To "Upgrade" My Bivy Bag

Above tree line bivvys are great and I’ve done them on Choquora and Isolation back in the day, if you stick to hard scape the damage is pretty minimal but still difficult to LNT. Especially when nature calls….
