    Homemade Insulated Gaiters Or Overboots

Appreciate that but I'm not sure a M or L will fit. Most of my boots are Size 11 so I'm guessing I'd need XL. I'm really hoping to find a gaiter type product to strap over my boots vs slipping my boots into another boot, adding and removing traction, etc. It's really just for picture taking...

    AMC Action Plan for 2025-30

I've never heard of that expression either for what it's worth. Not sure how that make's someone's existence "sheltered". Seems like an odd, self serving comment.

Must be from the same dictionary that has "ghetto birds" (trash bags caught in the branches of a tree) and suburban hamsters (rats). :)

    AMC Action Plan for 2025-30

That hasn't been my experience. I hit the Northern Presi's on a pretty regular basis and I can't say I've seen much in the way of trash or bathroom waste. I also hit North Lafayette and Lafayette via the Skook several times a year and also find it to be pretty clean, including the summits. I'd...

    AMC Action Plan for 2025-30

I would concur with this. I find a lot of people in the hut crowd to be pretty obnoxious actually and hardly there to experience the outdoors. More like going up there to say they went to their friends back home. I remember cutting past the Mizpah Hut late in the day several Summers back on way...

REI axes 400+ jobs in outdoors trips and education

That has to be a huge factor. For the in store instruction aren't they just paying one employee and charging as much as a few hundred bucks per customer to run the course? How do you lose money doing that? And if nobody signs up what are they losing? Their employee is already on the clock and...

I believe that is exactly what he did. I seem to recall reading that back when he summitted Everest.

    Homemade Insulated Gaiters Or Overboots

I do all these things. My feet just get cold easy.

    Homemade Insulated Gaiters Or Overboots

FWIW my inexpensive rubber over boots from Amazon were a bust. They went on well over my boots and the zipper moved quite well (was 2 deg F the day I tested) but after 10-15 minutes of standing around I could not tell the difference between the covered and the uncovered foot. I really thought...

    Homemade Insulated Gaiters Or Overboots

This is actually my current VB sock. My feet don't sweat in them. I find they help. Apparently my feet are just ice cubes....

    Nostalgia from 20 years ago

Yah you don't have to try to hard to drop $1,000 on a pack raft, especially if you don't want it to weigh as much as a boulder. I've used various Klymit products over the years and thing they're a good budget brand. I'll check it out. Thanks.

    Nostalgia from 20 years ago

Why have I not thought of this? Probably because I don't own a pack raft but I do enjoy impulse shopping for random gear I don't need so.... ;) Any recommendations on a brand? Don't know anything about this type of gear.

Hypothermic hiker rescued from Little Haystack by helicopter

Yes, actually you are right. I always thought the Wild River Wilderness began from Rte 113 but looking at Gaia the border is much further in (basically the Shelburne Trail and Basin Trail is the Eastern boundary). There are definitely some bad spots within the wilderness area (like the Sherburne...

Hypothermic hiker rescued from Little Haystack by helicopter

I wonder if the Wilderness Trail relocation amendments are directed at trails like the Highwater Trail in the Wild River Wilderness which is chronically destroyed with floods all the time. I breezed through the proposal and I get the impression that is not possible under current regulations. If...

    Dachstein Wool Products

The over mitt or the waterproof gloves? As TCD referenced SHOWA was the brand I was thinking of but I do not have any direct experience with it. Seal Skinz is the brand I have tried. I have an issue with the fit/thickness. Unless they are oversized they are kind of a pain to take off. On the...

    Dachstein Wool Products

Thanks. Missed the reference where ever it was upthread. This was the model he recommended on his blog: https://andrewskurka.com/review-showa-281-gloves-temres/. The 282 TCD mentioned he also likes for cold weather. He was getting at Seattle Marine And Fishing at time of article. They look to...

    Dachstein Wool Products

That hasn't been my experience of the waterproof gloves I've tried but I've only attempted to use them when it is very cold and wet. I basically wanted them for the ascents where you were handling snow covered branches and what not and then swap out of them to a dry pair at tree line or when the...

    Dachstein Wool Products

Andrew Skurka highly recommends a brand of glove like this whose brand I also can't recall. I think it was SHOWA (I had it bookmarked at one point but availability was on and off and I never purchased. This was awhile ago. May be different now). I've tried a variety of water proof gloves from...

Hypothermic hiker rescued from Little Haystack by helicopter

That was my first take. Going to be a much more boring albeit safer trail. I'd rather have seen some rock step staircases and other such "artificial" constructions (which I generally do not like because it is unnatural and out of place hiking in the woods to me) to maintain the existing route...
