Does color matter (when buying gear)?

Color coordination doesn't matter much to me, but sometimes it happens. Hey Carole, aren't you trying to have all your gear match your car? Sparkplug, thought you were one of the best dressed young women on the Trail last year. Happy Hiking, Don L

    Mt. Cardigan (NH) Elwell Trail

I've found the Elwell Trail out to Mt Oregon tricky to follow in places but certainly not abandoned. I noticed there has been some maintenance in the last few years (think it's Camp Mowglis doing the work) but the trail does have many sections that could use attention. I usually hike out to...

    Scar ridge

Was on Scar Ridge on Sunday 4/2. We also parked at the Discovery Trail parking area. We went east along the brook and found a good crossing. May want to bring traction aids (like stablicers) and snow shoes (if you plan to try for the "real" summit). Hope this is useful. Happy hiking, Don L

    Winter 48 in 9 Days

So that's what you guys were doing in the Bonds the other day. Congratulations! Hey Cath, Schorman Sr will surely kiss your snowshoes when he hears this. Happy hiking, Don L

Which VFTT members also AT hikers???

Started in March '05 and got from Springer Mt to Harriman State Park in NY when problems with the feet and knees knocked me off the Trail. I managed to eke out another couple hundred miles before I had to get off for '05. I'll be back on this year to do the last 600 miles! Happy Hiking, Don L

    Historic NH Fire Lookout Page

Uncanoonuc in Milford? There is/was a tower on Uncanoonus (South Peak) in Goffstown. Used to be a great place for blueberries before a forest of radio/tv/communications towers popped up. Thought there was still a restaurant of some sort in the 1950's with a picture window overlooking the city...

bears are still out; hunters are done

I was on the Monadnock/Sunapee Greenway near Lovewell Mt yesterday and saw what I thought were fairly fresh bear tracks. Maybe the critter knew hikers would be passing by and considered doing some yogiing. Happy Hiking

Winslow State Park (Mt Kearsarge, Wilmot NH)

I hiked Kearsarge from Winslow SP on Dec 8th. The road to the parking area from the junction of the town road (I think the town road is called Old Winslow Rd) was not plowed but passable at that time. Since than there has been quite a bit of snow and it's likely you'll have to walk the mile...

Nice hike on the Squam Range

I've done the Squam Range traverse quite a few times, usually as a bike/hike. We drop a vehicle with our hiking gear at the Cotton Mt trail head, drive to Mead Camp, and bike back to the Cotton Mt trail head. Then hike up and across the ridge, down to Sandwich Notch Rd, south along the road to...

    Mount Major

When I was on Straightback on Nov 11th the sign post was turned with the signs pointing in the wrong directions. I turned it so the the directions were correct. I am not sure the post is real secure; it could have been blown down with the recent winds. Happy Turkey Day and Happy Hiking to all...

    Favorite handsaw.

I really like my Sawvivor. It's very light weight and has an agressive blade. It functions like a bow saw and cuts much better than those fold-up saws with the cute curved blade ;) . Happy Hiking, Don L

Webster Slide Mtn & nearby AT

In late Sept. I did the AT from Glencliff to the Connecticut River in three day hikes. Day 1, parked at the Glencliff Tr parking lot on Sanitarium Rd (aka High St), rode my bike to the Rte 25-A crossing (14 miles), locked the bike to a tree in a bit on the trail, and hiked across to Glencliff...

Logging on the Carlo Col Trail

I was last on the Speck Pond Trail on Sept 21. The trail head had not impacted by the logging; the trail head sign was there, the parking area was fine. The trail adopter had put a sign on the trail to warn of logging operations. The only disruption I found was about 1 1/2 to 2 miles in there...

Logging on the Carlo Col Trail

I have been told that the Carlo Col Trail is now passable. There is a new road (over the old logging road and part of the trail) that may be driveable for most vehicles. But it may still be prudent to park at the parking area at Success Pond Rd as there is still cutting in the vicinity of the...

Logging on the Carlo Col Trail

The narrow grassy road has been widened to a road capable of carrying large logging trucks. From where the trail entered the woods at the end of the grassy road and for at least 1/4 mile (maybe further today) there is no longer a trail. It's a tangled mess of slash and downed trees that is not...

Logging on the Carlo Col Trail

Anyone planning to hike in the Mahoosucs should not plan to use the Carlo Col Trail. Logging operations have obliterated about a half mile of the lower section of the trail. The logging is ongoing and more of the trail will be lost. There is a considerable amount of slash and a tangled mess...

    Success Pond Rd

I was up there on Wednesday, from Hutchins St to the Speck Pond Trail. The road is in OK shape. There was regrading going on along the first few miles and there are the usual rough spots and washboarding in some areas. The road has been widened significantly since last fall. Lots of logging...

Made it to Pearisburg, VA from Damascus 162 miles in 8 days but can't seem to catch the elusive Dave and Michelle. When I was on Chestnut Knob I saw they had a party with Roy and didn't invite me. Missed the 12:00 PM Post Office dead line yesterday so I can't get my mail drop until Monday...

Made it to Damascus, VA from Erwin, TN, 120 miles plus in 6 days. It's been cold & windy in the mountains down here; several mornings I had ice in my water bottles. There is only one functioning public internet access in town right now so I have to be quick. Good weather is forcast for the...
