    Spruce Grouse? I don't know, I've seen a lot of spruce grouse before...I agree with you it's a black chicken! Probably sent from the Moat Farm to let you know it was time to turn-around. Next time I see a Black Chicken hiking - I head back to the car - or start a fire to have some lunch :-)

    Bug prediction for Lake Placid area?

    Before and up to Memorial day the black flies for the most part do not penetrate up above 2500' in the High Peaks. Places like Flowed Lands and Lake Colden are usually devoid of bugs. 1-2 weeks later it is a different story.
