    2009 Year in Preview...

Such ambitious plans. I'm fascinated by all the different plans everyone has put forth. Some of you have some great goals. Mine plans are much simpler. I just want to get out and hike a few times. I managed 0 trail time in 2008, so I'm jonesing for the mountains.

    Fall Gathering?

Technology Um, my hiking boots are still leather. Does that mean I'm obsolete? Remember when I showed up at G4 with a nifty new LED headlamp and everyone was skeptical of it but still wanted to check it out? I bet you all have LED headlamps now, dontcha? Sadly, that's probably the...

    Fall Gathering?

Speaking of old... Just passing through but since it seems like old home days here, I figured I'd send a shout out to y'all. Glad to see some of the old VFTT crew still kicking around. Darren's history lesson of the Gatherings brought back some fond memories, particularly of late nights in...

Fall Gathering 9.9999999 - Sep 21-23 White Birches

Missing another one Looks like I'll be missing this one, but I'll be thinking of you all and reminiscing about the jam session the last time the gathering was at the White Birches. Have a beer for me! :)

    Gathering 9.0 ????

You may laugh, but Stan, Eric, and I hiked Pine Mountain on the last day of Gathering 4.0. I ran into some friends I hadn't seen since college at the top. It's an easy hike, but it's a nice one and was perfect for a quick hike after a big breakfast and before the drive home. :) Anyway...

"Southbounders" (AT film) April 8th, 2006

Southbounders I was at the Ioka and it was a sold out show. They mentioned there was another showing Monday (4/10) at the Ioka, though I don't see it listed on their site. There are several other showings coming up and they're listed on the Southbounders blog, so check the schedule for one...

    WOOO HOOO!!!!! VFTT shirt arrived

Sluggish slug Ah, I didn't realize the shirts were not an ongoing thing, so I didn't rush to get an order in. I guess I should pay more attention, eh? I'll keep my eye out for the next round of orders.

    Black flies season

Black flies were out in force during Wednesday's warm weather in the Rochester/Dover, NH area. I'm sure they'll be out everywhere the next time the temperatures top 70. They typically start to appear at lower elevations in May and linger in higher elevations on into late June and July.

    Plane Crash

It was probably 5 or 6 years ago that I was there and it was an easily followable herd path at the time. Finding it was the hardest part, but once found it was pretty well worn (and rather muddy). I recall survey markers near the crash site and a rough path leading down the hill away from the...

    Plane Crash

Dc-3 It was a Northeast Airlines DC-3 and it crashed Dec. 1, 1954 on approach to the Berlin airport. My dad was in the Civil Air Patrol at the time and flew in the search for it. I visited the site several years ago. It's in the woods somewhat south of the summit and seventy to a hundred...

    Gathering 8.0 [and leather apron(s)]

Groovy I might be able to make this one. I might even convince the little woman to take a couple days off from teaching to make the trip, if there's Ben & Jerry's involved. I'm going to be changing jobs soon, so I'll have to see what sort of vacation arrangements I can make at the new one.

I'm I the only one anti-GPS out there?

I've never used a GPS. I can't see spending the money for one, but if someone were to give me one I'd at least play around with it. I carry a compass with me, but I've never needed it, either. They're both just tools. They're handy to have, but they're not really essential, at least not in...

    VFTT Website For Sale: $5

I'm number 1, I'm number 1! :) I didn't realize when I donated that I was the first, but I'm glad I could lead the way. I don't spend as much time on VFTT as I'd like or even as much time on the trail as I'd like, but it's still important to give something back. Thanks for all your efforts...
