    Solo Tent

A friend of mine is looking into purchasing a solo tent. The person doesn't do much backpacking, but does canoe trip, so weight is less of an issue. Any suggestions on brands and where to buy? Thanks in advance. Fitz.

    Massachusetts Mandatory PFD?

I heard through the grapevine that his bill got through the legislature on Friday. "Canoes" was recently added under the cover of darkness. Apparently, it is now on the way to the Governor's desk and Common Sense is out the window. All canoeists and kayakers are required to wear a type I, II...

    Algonquin Park, Ontario

A bunch of wooden canoe nuts from the Norumbega and Northeast Chapters of the Wooden Canoe Heritage Association took a 5-day trip to Algonquin near the end of May. We had absolutely stunning weather the whole time. Some skeeters in camp and under the canoes on the portages but otherwise a great...

    Chutes and ladders

I climbed the Precipice Trail in Acadia the other morning. One puts a great deal of faith in the iron ladders on that trail. I also can't imagine how they were installed. Does anyone know exactly how these iron rungs were installed?

    West Branch Trip

We spent a few days with wood and canvas on the West Branch Penobscot and Chesuncook. Here are a few photos: http://outdoors.webshots.com/album/563502166ZbLYwa Despite the forecasts, we nailed the weather. It was beautiful.

    In the Shadow of Katahdin

We spent last weekend tripping in wood and canvas canoes through the lakes region south of Mt. Katahdin in Maine. Of course we picked a Northeaster to do it in!! We had heavy rains, snow, sleet, 75F and sun, and wind driven rains off the bow all in the space of about 72 hours. That's Maine for...

Hiking in Maine - Do you have your permit?

Someone please tell me I'm wrong. I'm an avid paddler and I'm all bent out of shape by the State of Maine's pending efforts to register all canoes, kayaks and sailboats, but if you read through more of the budget bill I came across this tidbit: LD#468 Sec. III-47. Nonconsumptive user card or...

Suggestions for an Overnighter with 5 yr Old

I'm looking for suggestions for an out and back or loop type overnighter to take with my 5-year old son. He's canoe camped and car camped before and loves it, but he has not "backpacked". I would carry most of the gear, and I'm thinking he could handle a up to about 5-mile walk in and back out...
