Mt. Moosilauke, George Brook - Carriage Rd.

Standard loop-- up the George Brook Tr and down the Carriage Rd and Snapper Tr. The Ravine Lodge Road is in good shape, but new work has been done to it. We were warned by the guy with the earth movers to be careful on the sides of the repaired sections as they are still quite soft-- something...

Irene -- Please use this thread for NH/VT/ME road closures

Any word on the Ravine Lodge Rd. to Moosilauke? Sometimes it doesn't get included in Forest Service lists. Thanks

    Lean-to Suggestion

Maybe a little too far, but Taylor Pond has three nice lean-to's all located in different spots. They're all on the water and relatively easily accessible via the snowmobile path that runs around the lake. Usually quiet, the pond is big one too. The lean-to on the west bank has a stream that...

New Trail on Lyon + Mtns. you love to return to.

So according to the ADK website there's a "new" hiking trail up Lyon. http://www.adk.org/press/Lyon_Mountain_Trail.aspx Does anyone have a map of it? I'm just curious as to which direction they decided to go up. I think I have two solid ideas, I'm just curious if I'm correct. After...

    whats the black fly prediction

They're here, now. Just spent the day canoeing down near the St. Regis area, the wind kept them away on the open water, but once we got near the shore and it calmed up they were crawling all over me. Inadvertently ate a couple too, yum yum- protein.

    OK Slip Falls

Aaah, OK, very good, thank you! This month's Adirondack Life has something about Finch and Pruyn (or however you spell that, it's late now for me) but the mag is all in plastic and I don't think Hannafords would appreciate me tearing into it in the check-out line and not buying it.

    OK Slip Falls

So, a "no go" just because it's private land and you're making a blanket statement, or a "no go" because you have specific knowledge to this site? Just trying to clarify because I could read your post two ways- no ill intent meant on my part... thanks. Edit: and actually, if you've got any...

    OK Slip Falls

Has anyone been here? They are just opposite the Hudson River of Kettle Mountain, nestled in between the west and east portions of the Hudson Gorge Primitive Area. Fed by OK Slip Pond to OK Slip Brook. They seem big- real big. It appears to be private land, but maybe there's an easement...

    Cold weather sleeping bag

Might be a little late for me to chime in, but I have the Katahdin +20 (about 3, maybe 4 years old now) and I am so happy with it, that I'm seriously considering the -20 Katahdin. The weight is a little weight-y, but I'll be sledding it in anyway, and the price and warranty are tough to beat.

    Strange bugs!

wo-ho! The casing all the way on the right sort of looks like what I saw, this does make sense, it does! And yes, I've been wondering about this all summer, but my internet access up here in the North Country is now quite limited, and the few times I got on here I forgot to ask...

    Strange bugs!

Rise and shine neighbors! Waaaaaaaaay back in June, on one of my first Adirondack overnights, I was lounging around a high-altitude pond looking for wierdness, and boy, did I find some! In the water, climbing, wallowing, and moving around rocks and reeds were little 0.75" towering piles of...

Islands in the Stream - Why?

Some Pics Completely by chance, I was flipping through my parent's collection of National Geographic and found one with an article on New Hampshire. As a Granite Stater now-removed, I cracked it open. Dec. 1982 issue, pages 776-777 has a two page picture of the Androscoggin with the islands...

    West Nile Virus

Agreed. The fervor that people are working themselves up in regards to WNV is, in my opinion, somewhat misplaced, especially when I watch the insecticide truck spray who-knows-what kind of chemicals into my open bedroom window during the dead of night. Edit: Word usage.

    Altimeter Guidance Needed - Please

Lately, I've been returning to simpler, more traditional gear. My altimeter is a beautiful analog made in Germany. It was my grandfather's, and now it is mine. It's dependable and does the job without any batteries-- as was mentioned. Looks great with my wood and rawhide snowshoes and wool...

Driving golf balls on Mt. Washington

This happened to me when I first did Washington 4 years ago. I went to bag the summit and I had a friend from Lake Tahoe who had never hiked in the East before. So we went up to the sign to bag the summit, let some others who were there first get their pics in, and then moved in for the bag...

MEC Talisman. Long sizes available too. If you have a long neck, you might find that the throat closure doesn't come as high as you might want it. It's worth a look.

Coyote Encounter on Day Hike ??

I would not worry about the coyote. They're fearless, pretty much, as in they just don't give a darn. I operate incredibly loud, heavy, machinery that travels at very high speeds, and they'll just sit there watching me coming towards them before moving at the very last moment. Funny stuff...

    Passaconaway & Whiteface on 06/11/05

Hahaha, this is why I have to go back to Whiteface, man did I feel like an idiot when I got back to the car and re-read the description in the guide. However, as mentioned, man, Ferncroft is beautiful, Wonalancet, while small, is a great little mountain.
