    Trail maintenance etiquette

I will often get requests from my USFS trail manager (I'm a volunteer) to remove blowdowns that are on adopted or un-adopted trails. Frankly they are ones that are sizable and would require someone with axe or crosscut saw training. I dropped a hazard 2' diameter Hemlock blowdown near the basin...

Trail Maintenance in the White Mountains

Training required for both axe and chainsaw use. Volunteers rarely sign up for or get chainsaw certs. I'm a volunteer trainer for the axe use program on WMNF. Trainings usually take place in the spring.

Reminder - NH - Hands free device while driving law in effect

I don't think this is the case. (b) “Driving,” for the purposes of this section, shall not include when a person is behind the controls of a vehicle that has pulled to the side of or off the road at a location where it is legal to do so and where the vehicle remains stationary.

    Irene Closures & Redlining rules

Different Forest Service ranger districts. Different projects. More planning and decisions involved in dry river I'd guess. Also different trail crew staffing levels among districts.

    Sawyer Pond trail 07/25/2014

I have many many axes so have the liberty of choosing a different one most days. I prefer single bits over doubles but for no particular reason. Lately I've been using a Plumb axe in the Connecticut pattern - similar to the ones shown below.

    Sawyer Pond trail 07/25/2014

Admittedly I hike just as an excuse to clear trails these days. This trip to the Sawyer Pond trail was no exception. Plus I need to get ready for the Dry River trail. Maybe it was the construction but I only saw a group of three people on the trail this day Passing through the Kanc...

Brook trail fir wave, Mt. Chocorua

Was heading up to Chocorua a few weeks ago and was distracted by a very recent fir wave (or maybe just some storm damage). There were five trees blocking the trail. After breaking an axe handle, I went back down to get my spare axe :D and cleared four of the larger trees. I intend to go back to...

    Chocorua redlining & bee stings

re: Beeline I went out last weekend and axe'd out three blowdowns near the junction of the beeline cutoff. They looked very old (and were). I started down the beeline cuttoff but turned around as it looked unmaintained.
