    Four Soldiers Path

Hiking eastbound away from the Pond of Safety this trail becomes impassable about a mile in. Large area from past ice storms is totally overgrown with thick, thorn covered brush. After two blazed trees it was anyone's guess which way to go. I descended via bushwhack and reached a brook which I...

    Northwest Basin Trail - BSP

Very wet - tough going after first mile or so. Stream crossing was high, fast and tricky - slabs were wet and marked so-so. Above Davis the trail is a stream, but not tough to avoid wettest spots. Wild and I loved it!

Baxter State Park - Northwest Basin

LINK TO TRIP REPORT Hi all - I am trying to consolidate all of my writings into one place - so this time my TR is on my blog - report is long, but not as long as usual and has pics embedded - at the bottom of the review there is a link to many more pics (from each of four days) and a panoramic...

    Great Gulf Campsites

any info on campsites appreciated - have not been out there (beyond Madison Gulf) in over a decade - I recall some sights as you approach the Six Husbands/Wamsutta area - are there many beyond that point before Spaulding Lake? Did I read that there is one on the Wamsutta close to the junction...

    Hastings Trail

Does anyone know if the abandoned Hastings Trail in the Evans Notch area is still basically followable? It was abandoned around 2007 est. thanks

    Dry River Trail to Falls

Water levels have receeded - Mt. Clinton Trail crossing is safe to do, but probably not doable without getting your feet wet - but no big deal. The further past the suspension bridge you get, the more frequent and interesting the obstacles get - many blowdowns - all negotiable...a couple where...

    Dry River Falls

Just a quick blurb - as it seems like no one ever goes here...Dry River Falls are about 10-15 minutes north of the Mt. Ike Trail junction on the DRT - unmarked side path that goes down a mudslide to a plateua above the falls - great campsite - spectacular falls. Some pics along the trail and...

Almost famous - sapblatt and LarryD make the paper

Well, anyone who has read my reports over the past few years has probably been waiting for the day when there would be a newspaper story about me - well happy to report that this was a story about a remote corner of Baxter State Park - not a SAR report! Larry and I ran into the park director...

    Frost Pond Trail - BSP

Lightly used trail - rough shape first mile from Freezeout Trail towards lean to - boot and gaiter sucking mud - not really avoidable - nice trail, beautiful lean to - mellow ascent to Wadleigh Mountain - viewpoint is not spectacular - many trees to contend with. Reasonable descent back to...

    Adventures in Baxter State Park

After last years great time we planned again - this time the trip included me, LarryD, Rols, Tuco, Marty and Jason Berard. Sadly, some issues came up and Bobby had to cancel - hopefully we will get back next year and get Bobby up to Baxter. This year our group had a couple of different...

    Wadleigh Brook Trail

Trail is rarely used (northern section of BSP) - but easy to follow - well blazed, good footbed when you can see it. Big issues shortly after the Blunder Bog/Pond logging road crossing the area where the trail once was was obliterated by clear cut logging ops. Trail could not be found. LarryD...

Irving Liss founder of Hilton's Tent City has died

If you have not been to Hilton's it is a gem - they have everything and Irving was a great entrepreneur who knew how to treat customers and insisted on the same from his staff - a legend. http://www.legacy.com/obituaries/bostonglobe/obituary.aspx?n=irving-e-liss&pid=132528863

    studded boots

A friend of mine asked me if anyone still makes boots with studs in them - he had them years ago - cannot remember the brand. Does anyone make them? Who used to? I know a lot of people here make their own.

A week at Baxter State Park – September 13-19, 2008 - PART TWO

Day Four – Pogy Pond to Russell Pond – Caverly Lookout, Grand Falls, Turner Deadwater Everyone who assured me that I would see tons of moose on this trip I have to say I managed to spend a week at Baxter and I did not see one. On this morning, I heard a bunch of crashing about in the woods...

A week at Baxter State Park – September 13-19, 2008 - PART ONE

The place I have never managed to get to…Baxter State Park has finally been visited. About a year ago Eric (Tuco), Paul (Rols) and Larry (LarryD) began discussing the possibility of getting a good chunk of time off to head up way north to BSP. After talking about a lot of things we decided that...

    Showers near Baxter State Park

Can anyone lead me towards a place where showers can be had when leaving Baxter State Park? After a week in the back country I think this may be a good plan for the ride home... Alternatively, a place with a pressure washer may work as well! Also, a recommendation for a good place to eat...
