Cog claims you need to pay to cross the tracks

They might need to build a toll booth on The Gulfside Trail.

    Leki Trekking Poles

Thanks everybody. It looks like I should have asked for advice before I traded them in as "defective". I never thought to try adjusting the tension of the locks.

    Leki Trekking Poles

I bought new poles for the first time in many years. Leki Corklite. I loved them (and the design of the locks) on my first hike - South Carter. But on my second hike - Monroe - the lock on one of the poles failed time after time when I put my full weight on them during the decent. Ammonoosuc...

    Trails with Ladders

About a year ago I came upon an aluminum ladder leaning (un-secured) against a ledge on the A.T. in Vermont. I started that day on River Road in Killington and went north. I believe the ladder was about 1/2 to 3/4 of a mile north of the campground who's name I can't remember. I had the feeling...

    Shrewsbury Peak, Vermont

Many of the hiking trails in that area have been relocated to avoid the ski trails.

To GRID or not to GRID that is the question...

I keep a grid, but I'm convinced that I will never complete it. I hike solo most of the time, so I don't always have a specific destination in mind until just before I pack my gear. If the weather forecast looks perfect then I head for the Presidentials or some other Alpine Zone. But when I need...

    I love Baxter State Park

This time we'll be right in the thick of things. Katahdin Stream Camp. I like to meet the through hikers in all of their glory. Also, we will do a road trip along the Tote Road to do some moose scouting. Late September can be an "active" time for the big critters. I believe I also saw somewhere...

    I love Baxter State Park

I just got reservations for a long weekend in early Fall, and I'm happier than a 5 year old on Christmas morning. That's all I have to say about that.

Chateauguay Rd. / AT / Bridgewater, VT

I drove that road as far as I could. Then I walked it for far more than the .6 that the guide book suggests. I could not find the AT crossing. Have any of you tried to find this approach to the AT? Did I walk or drive right by it?

    Camel's Hump - Monroe - 11/25

An inch or 2 of new snow all the way. Several patches of ice. We used Microspikes for all but the bottom 1.5miles. The road was ok to the normal parking lot. My guess is that real soon the gate will be closed and everybody will need to use the winter parking lot.

Schaghticoke? It's from my AT guide for Connecticut, near the New York border.

Camping in area of Carter Hut

I think I spotted a sight beyond the hut on the ?Wildcat River Trail?. It was outside the 1/4 mile zone, south of the hut, but it was right beside the trail. So, I can't say if it is legal or not. Anyone know the spot I'm talking about?

    Stargazing at Baxter

There are a few picnic areas at Nesowadnehunk Camp in open areas. Just drive to the fork in the road and turn left toward the ranger station. They are on the right. It's also a good spot for moose gazing at dusk.

July 3rd Fireworks Observation hike ?

Very interesting. For a lazy hiker (like me) would they be visible from low on the Caps Ridge Trail? Near the "Potholes"?

The Northwest Basin of Mt. Katahdin was one of my favorites. We hiked through the basin to get to Chimney Pond from Russell Pond. Great hike.

    AT in Baxter

I have not taken the time to investigate the actual new rules. But the Ranger at Nesowadnehunk, where we camped, asked us upon check in time, "Where are you hiking tomorrow?". I replied "The Owl", and I thought he was going to faint. He told us that for the busy parking lots we need to reserve a...
