Transporting bikes and canoes on Outback ?

trailer hitch bike rack I have a 2013 Outback which should be about the same as yours. I have a 1 1/4" trailer hitch with a Thule 917XTR T2 rack mounted to it. I have traveled about 6,000 miles with a mountain bike and a cross bike on it. I have travelled on dirt roads and paved roads...

    Monongahela National Forest

Blackwater Falls is worth seeing. There is a nice lodge there. Blackwater Canyon might be a place you'd like to explore. You can actually drive to the top of Spruce Knob. Seneca Rocks is a great place. Lots of White water rafting in WVa if you like. The New and the Gauley Rivers are great...

west point invades Harriman state Park!

I don't see much problem whether it is cadets or an orienteering club. Its always nice to have the woods to ourselves but that doesn't seem to be how it works as a general rule.

If anyone in your group has a parking permit, you can put that car or those cars at the end near the creek in the spots for Nat'l Forest users.

Falls Trail, Rickett's Glen State Park, Pa. 7 mile loop, 22 named waterfalls, the highest of which is 94 feet. Many of the trees in the Lower Glen are over 300 years old. The park sits on a natural fault in the Allegheny Mountains. Go after a couple days of heavy rain and the falls are...

I think the embroided hat would look better and the lettering would hold up better.

    emergency bivy ?

MSR E Bivvy I have an MSR E bivvy. It is about the size of a coke can. I haven't used it much but I slept out in it the first night I got it to try it. It rained. My sleeping bag and I stayed dry. It is a bit claustraphobic inside as there is nothing to keep it off your face when closed...

Missing Massachusetts Hiker located and safe

I don't see anything wrong with a prepared person hiking alone. Factoring in the weather report and the weather you find is part of being prepared. It seems this guy was coming out on his own and was prepared. He just wasn't able to let his wife know he was ok. As for accidents, it doesn't...

    Essential Books?

"Points Unknown" by David Roberts. This is a collection of one to two chapter length exerpts from a wide variety of adventure books ranging from climbing, kayaking canyons, polar exploration, Borneo, desert, ocean, and whatever. It picks out a highpoint in the book and gives you a good read...

    Posting 'secret' spots online

I would tell a friend of a special spot but I sure wouldn't publish it to everyone. Have ya seen the amount of litter people leave in special spots? Anything from broken beer bottles to diapers. No thanks. Most people who get out have found their own cache of special spots without needing to...

    hiking/XC skiing in northwestern MA

KD, for future reference the rangers sell wood at the office up the road that burns much better than the $3 a bundle junk down the road. They are also closer. You can also resupply on water there. We made the mistake of buying that wood one time too and cleaned a pile of it from cabin one this...

    hiking/XC skiing in northwestern MA

Savoy rocks. Its a great place. Trout and I found a moose dieing on the North Pond Loop trail one year. The biologist came and put it out of its misery and cut off the lower jaw. It was dieing of brainworm we later learned. The hike up Spruce Hill affords a fantastic 360 degree view...

    freeze dried foods.....

My experience is that anything with meat in it needs to soak longer than what the package reccomends or it is like hard chunks of cardboard. Rice and pasta are usually ok. Spaghetti with meat sauce usually turns out ok. You can buy foil packages of chicken or tuna and toss in with rice to...

    Eastern PA hikes?

Rickett's Glen is about 2 hours from Milford. It is as nice a hike as you'll ever find. A little over 5 miles if you start at the southern end, hike up one side across the top, and back down the other side. But if its icy its extremely treacherous. Its been warm down here lately so I don't...
