    Are We a Dying Breed?

I have semi-custom orthotics that I use only in my hiking boots, and that has improved some of the blister and footsoreness problems I used to have. Probably also helping extend the life of my feet.

    Are We a Dying Breed?

Millennial speaking here! So regarding the boots... I had a number of boot disasters in the early years, and then on my AT thru-hike, and I settled on Keens for summer and Columbia for winter, and never changed brands again. What I heard about Limmers at the beginning was that there was a two...

    Are We a Dying Breed?

Wrong! 33 year old here, and I've been a member since 2004!

    goggles

No idea for between 50 and 150, but I can tell you there was huge difference between 10 and 60! The ten buck ones didn't get a seal on my face, and I got windburn skiing and on summits. Bought the cheapest pair in the Okemo Ski Shop one year (60) and they made a big difference, I do sometimes...

    ticks

Heard that you don't want a snow cover for tick killing, you want no snow and a horrible freeze so the frost goes way down. The snow is insulating. Too bad it snowed first this year!

Does long-term hiking have to involve a list?

I made myself a list this year, but it was for my own benefit, so I would stop forgetting the million little places I want to hike "someday". I add stuff when I think of it, it includes mountains, national parks, rivers to paddle, countries I want to visit. At this point I will finish the 4000...

    Cohos Trail

I've hiked the entire thing. My hiking partner and I meant to do the whole thing as a thru the first year, but I destroyed my feet (combination of trying new, disastrous inserts and road walking in the north) and was off in four days. We did a week the next summer and finished it the third year...

All My Layers Are Soaked - Now What?

I do carry 5-6 pairs of gloves because my hands sweat so badly and freeze when I stop. It's usually my base layers that get soaked hiking up hill if I have too many layers on, so I spend a lot of time taking clothes on and off and this really helps. My main decision angst is usually how many...

The Photo Below Mine is ...

OK, I wasn't excatly hiking, but we raced (galloped) to the top of the snowmobile trail and came to Mirkwood. I love this trail. The photo below mine was taken on the Monadnock-Sunapee Greenway.

    Geyser-like spring on Mt Equinox

If that is the piped spring off the burr and burton trail, I've seen it both exploding and at a trickle as well. I was disappointed the second time because it had been so spectacular the first, but I supposed it had to do with rainfall.

    camping in the Greens, Vermont

There are a number of shelters before and after those peaks, but yes, if you want to camp away from other people, you should be able to find a spot if you're not near treeline.

The Photo Below Mine is ...

I think this is Hell Brook, the first crossing on the Long Trail north of Smuggler's Notch, last June. Frenchman's was much worse that day, but my pictures are blurry. The whole trail was under water from Whiteface on down. The photo below mine is of a Vermont summit in winter.

The Photo Below Mine is ...

The picture below mine is of a summit in Baxter State Park that is NOT on the New England Hundred Highest List!

The Photo Below Mine is ...

My friend and her dog on Hump Mountain in NC several years ago. It was March, and I burned to a crisp that day with my lily-white new England skin that hadn't seen sun since October. The photo below mine is of a hike in mud season.

    Moosilauke via Gorge Brook, 3/5/16

Date of Hike: March 5 Trail Conditions: After reading all the horrific trail conditions and ice in the past few weeks, and knowing that I would be hiking with my Dad, I suggested we hike the Carriage Road the whole way up. However, Breezy Point Road was not plowed past the last mail box, so we...

Hiking in the extreme cold this weekend?

I drove to Maine on Saturday via Crawford Notch and back on Sunday via the Kanc. The crazy hikers were out on Saturday, but had thought better of it on Sunday, which was the sunnier day. Skiers at Bretton Woods and Attitash on Sat but almost none at Loon on Sunday. No cars in the lots on Sunday.

Waumbek via Starr King and Kilkenney Ridge

    Journey's End Road-LT Northern Terminus

I've been doing a section hike with my father of the Long Trail for almost ten years now. We will finish this year at the Canadian border, still need to nail down a weekend this fall for the last section. Also about ten years ago, my father dropped my brother off for a SOBO end-to-end in mid...

    Mt Davis On Montalban Ridge

This past weekend a friend and I did the Cohos Trail route over Eisenhower, down to the Dry River, up to the Davis Path and down the ridge. Water everywhere, so this is the time for an overnight if anyone is interested. We camped at the site below the Davis Path on Isolation East, but there was...
