Did you ever spend an unplanned night in the woods?

I haven't spent an unplanned night out, which I suppose is good. There are good suggestions here, but to me by far the best emergency option is to carry a bothy bag. No other option (sleeping bag, bivy, tarp, fire) is even remotely close or as useful. For solo trips, I have this one...

    Plus size women's winter gear?

at a glance, cabelas offers up to 2x xl for women, and often had great deals.

    Blizzard Bag Review

The blizzard bag has always looked interesting. But to have one item for survival, I think the bothy bag is the better choice. My 3-4 person bothy weighs 14 oz, so much lighter per person. The bothy also can provide a sheltered location to avoid the crisis or tend to someone wounded or repair...

    Need a new 3-season shell

the cabela's packlight goretex shell is maybe the best value option out there. I have precip shell, but I end up almost never using it for dayhikes. Precip was cheap and well known when it came out, but that was a long time ago. If you are spending more than $100, I would look for Event.

    Big Mansfield Circuit: Butler->LT->Sunset->CCC->Maple->Frost

    Emergency Number for Vermont

Vermont uses 911, so that would be the obvious choice for you. If your wife is out of state, she could call the VSP barracks, in any location, preferable the local one. Except some aren't open 24/7 (I think Williston is though). http://www.dps.state.vt.us/vtsp/contactus.html Actually though...

    Mt. Mansfield VT

I love sunset ridge, and I love maple ridge even more. But I would not recommend them for someone afraid of modest scrambling. Even Sunset has some exposure, ledges, and cracks. Nothing hard, but a novice may find it hard and hot and exposed in the middle of summer. Plus, as noted it is a...

Garmin GPS 60CSx vs. the Etrex line

The crawford path and other trails are shown on the OSM routable map. I can't seem to get the OSM trails to show up on my garmin vista at the same as the NE Topo map, but that may be device specific or related to zoom settings, detail, etc. But the trails are there if I turn off the topo and...

Which car would you recommend for remote bushwhacking?

There are lots of choices and considerations (subura outback?), and by 4x4, it is hard to tell what you mean by that. You have a mini van, and if you need that kind of size, then there are lots of SUVs that are large enough to sleep in and should be able to handle logging roads. If you want...

closed cell booties insulate light weight footwear for snowshoeing

I bought my partner boot gloves for her leather teleboots years ago. they definitely added warmth. But I wonder if the added weight defeats the purpose of wearing light hikers. Using an insulated boot would probably be lighter than a light boot + the bootie warmer.

    Recommended GPS?

The vista is rated at 25 hours, so it is a significant difference. The vista battery life is exceptional, so it can run continuously over multiple days. The vista weighs 5.5 oz, and the 60 csx is 7.5, so also a significant difference. The 62st tips in at over 9 oz. Weight may not matter to...

    Recommended GPS?

I think the substantial advantages of the vista hcx over the 60 csx are 1) lighter and smaller and 2) longer battery life. For a hiking GPS, either of those can be important. the 60 csx may have slightly better GPS performance, but the vista hcx is good enough that it may not matter in real...

    What's a good locator beacon?

I don't have either. But you may want to read this review on equipped to survive. They also have reviews and a lot of discussion about the Spot. http://www.equipped.com/McMurdoNewFastFind.htm I would personally tend to go for the lightest and smallest option that works, since you are...

    Hardshell Jacket Suggestions

I'd recommend a softshell jacket for what you are doing, if this means winter, since that will be tougher and much more comfortable. If you like paclite, cabela's may have the cheapest option around, now on sale for $80...

    Heart Monitor ?

I would (strongly) recommend getting a polar with the "wearlink" chest strap over the plastic one. It will be much more comfortable. I don't think I would want to hike with the plastic kind personally. Once you are in the wearlink models, you are in the mid price range, which will be under...

    Help/advice - "hiker car" needed??

I have an 2010 Element now, but previously had a Rav4 and long ago, a subaru wagon. I like them all, and in AWD + snow tires, think they are basically functionally equivalent. You live in Vt, so getting AWD if you want makes sense IMO. If sleeping in the back is really a criteria, I think...

Where to? Overnight hike with students in Vermont...

when are thinking of coming? The GMC shuts down most trails/shelters during mud season, which stretches to Memorial day. Then you get bugs.

    Alternative to Fleece Jacket?

A puffy jacket is going to give you a lot more warmth then fleece. But I don't think you need to go up to the 19oz MH. I would want to stay closer to the 10-12 oz range for spring/summer/fall, and for compressibiility and warmth, down in the way to go. If you have an eddie bauer around, the...
