    Mt. Flume Helicopter Rescue

I heard on NPR this evening that there was a medical emergency and helicopter rescue from the top of Mt. Flume (an unusual place for rescues...). Has anybody found more details?

    Mystery photos

You know, for being such a fascinating mountain, Mt. Bond has a very unassuming profile when viewed from this angle....

    Mystery photos

I agree with Mattl... I think it is taken from the Willey Range Trail, close to the top of Mt. Field. From that angle, it might be hard to see the small alpine zone on Bond's eastern shoulder, which would have given it away. Here's a pic from Bond, looking back at Field and Whitewall.... Are...

    Are you a knowledge-aholic?

Ya, I'm pretty much hooked on reading Laura and Guy Waterman's "Forest and Crag". I bought it at The Mountain Wanderer in February, and am only a few hundred pages into it. I walk around my apartment now saying things like "I really feel like hiking a trail built by Edmunds this weekend." Or...

    A Mystery Slide trip report

Bushwack to Osceola? I haven't hiked the Osceola's yet, but I think I can bairly see the Arrow slide distant in one of your pics. When I was on North Hancock, I noticed that the north face of Osceola was heavily scarred by slides... Could one of the slides in this pic from the top of North...

NJ bear on AT dragged camper from tent

WCVB Channel 5 in Boston showed the bear "attack" video on Good Morning America today. Keep a look out tonight, maybe it will be on again. For one thing, I was shocked that one person stood there and caught the bear on video and didn't do anything. As soon as the person in the sleeping bag...

    Franconia Falls

I am planning on going for a little hike with my Fiance this weekend and I decided to take a stroll up to Lincoln Woods. I've never been to this trailhead so I thought I'd go for a walk there in anticipation of a Bonds traverse I hope to do soon. I decided to call ahead and get a pass to...

what digicam to buy for trails?

I totally agree that there are some great photographers who post on this site... I took advice from VFTT over the winter and bought an Olympus D440?. I forget the model number, but it has three times optical zoom and uses AA batteries. I really like having a camera that uses the same batteries...

At what point do you need plastic mountaineering boots ?

I've got Degres and I've got Kamik double insulated pack boots... I'd prefer to hike in the Kamik's, but fitting crampons to them would be difficult. The Degres fit crampons like a glove... never come loose. Unfortunately, I think it sometimes takes multiple purchases before you find the...

    AFTER Hiking

I'd have to go with some vanilla bread pudding after a burger at the Common Man in Ashland, especially after bagging a peak in the Sandwich Range. Who wouldn't be hungry after that? I'm hoping to get up to hike Old Speck this year so I could toast the occasion with an "Old Speckled Hen" pint...

    Pinkham this Saturday, 7/16

Since you will be hiking the Wildcats, might I recommend trying to hike from Glen Ellis? Try the river crossing, it's only 100 feet from the parking lot. If it's unmanagable, drive up to Pinkham. I did this a few weeks ago and crossed the river... However, I bonked on the ridge on the way...

    Arrow slide

When the loop trail splits and you head for North Hancock, you dip down to a stream before starting up North Hancock. I read that you could find the wash-out of the slide by following the stream a few hundred feet. When I hiked the Hancocks two weeks ago, this area with the stream was heavilly...

    Amc?

I have only had fantastic experiences with the AMC-associated people I have met (hikers, Boston trip leaders, croos, employees in Boston and Pinkham).

Did/Is anyone saving one 4000'er for last?

I'd like to finish on Cannon Mountain, which was one of the first 4k's I saw when I climbed my first NH 4k, Liberty. Also, non-hikers could join me via the gondolla. It's also the closest 4k to Boston that I have remaining... I'd like to save Carrigain for my second-to-last, but I've got 27...

I need a cool helmet for hiking

I can definitly understand the desire to wear a helmet when hiking. I've hit my head falling while hiking on ice a few times with enough force to get dizzy and see stars. And that has been a relatively small fall of only about 5 feet. I am always falling over when hiking! My tail bone still...

True confessions - They're funny cuz they're true.

On my one and only scouting trip to Sabatas in the Daks, I went into the latrene. I had my nice new Boy Scout pocket knife sheathed between my first belt loop and my buckle. I undid my buckle to relieve myself, and said pocket knife slid off of belt and fell into the latrean. Thus started a...

winter peak bagging with non insulated boots

Last weekend I saw the new Koflach Degre's on sale at Ragged Mountain in North Conway for $169, if I recall correctly. They may have only had limited sizes left, but I thought it could be useful information to somebody. Cheers, Haystacker
