    Car Camping, Northwest, CT

Hello, I'm wondering if anyone can tell me the best places to car camp in Northwestern, CT area. It's ok if the campsites are right over the border into Mass. or NY. Preferably with a river near the campsites, and some privacy of course. I'd like to have day hiking access to the Bear Mt. area...

    "Grizzly Man" DVD

I enjoyed the movie. I think we can all find a part of ourselves in Treadwell. My favorite character was Willy Fulton, the bush pilot. The music was really great, I actually purchased the soundtrack which I would recommend to anyone.

    Bear Rock Falls Campsite, MA

Hello, Has anyone camped in this area this year. Is Bear Rock Falls Campsites still closed? The new one, "Laurel Ridge" campsite, which I was told is a tenth of a mile south of Bear Rock Falls, can you build fires at these sites? Thanks! Josh

    Seattle

Gator, I lived in Edmonds, WA for three years, about 15 minutes north of Seattle right on Puget Sound. I commuted to Everett for part-time work at Everett Parks and Recreation, sometimes there was traffic, sometimes not. You don't want to live east of Lake Washington if you're working in...

Sages Ravine, Bear Rock Stream Camp, Mt. Everett

Hello, Has anyone parked at East St. parking area and hiked the .8 mile access trail called Northwest Rd. to the AT? Is this a good starting point? I was planning on starting here to access Sages Ravine, then continue to Bear Rock Stream Camp for a night, then summit Race Mt. and Mt. Everett...

    Treadway Mountain, Adirondacks, NY

Thanks for the info so far. We'll have tents so we probably won't stay in lean-to's. It seems like there are a bunch of lean-to's. Are there just as many tent sites available along the ponds? Thanks again everybody! Josh

    Treadway Mountain, Adirondacks, NY

Hello, Has anyone made the Treadway Mountain Hike into a short backpacking trip? Can you camp along Putnam Pond, Mud Pond, or Clear Pond? Or are there sites along the trail? I know there is a drive-in campground at Putnam Pond, but I'd rather hike in and camp. Any info concerning this hike...

    Snake bites

Just curious if anyone has ever experienced getting bit by a snake while hiking or backpacking? What kind? What did you do for first aid? This is something I never think about and I would like to know exactly what to do if myself or somebody I knew ever got into this situation. Even if you've...

Mt. Frissell or Bear Mt., CT?

Northwest Connecticut hiking... Debating between hiking up Mt. Frissell via Mt. Washington Rd. or doing the Bear Mt. loop via Rt 41/Under Mt. Trail. I was just wondering if I could get some opinions on which hike is more enjoyable? Thanks, Josh

    Do you need Bear spray?

If you feel comfortable with carrying bear spray then do it. I do. I don't have it in a holster, I'm not that paranoid, but if the chance ever came up I'd be glad I had it, especially in the evening when you're trying to eat dinner. Most of all, I carry it to defend myself from crazy people on...

    Roaring Brook Campground hikes, Baxter?

I will be camping for one night at Roaring Brook Campground. I'm looking for advice on an easy to moderate day hike from the campground. Is South Turner Mountain a good choice? Or is the hike to Chimney Pond better? How is the hike up Chimney Peak? Thanks! Josh

    AT in Connecticut & Mass.?

Thanks Aaron, but it won't be this weekend. Not sure when, but in the coming weeks for sure. Chip, what did the person have in their pack? I had bears in camp in the Adirondacks kick around my canister, about ten feet from the tent, clapped my hands and they were gone, didn't come near the...

    AT in Connecticut & Mass.?

Active bear? Meaning it has visited the campsites in the evening. I do own a bear canister and have dealt with bears before so I think and hope he won't be a problem. Has anyone seen this bear during the day time or is it night activity? This is good to know about before setting out. Thanks! Josh

    AT in Connecticut & Mass.?

Hello, I'm looking for a warm-up, one night or two, backpacking trip on the Appalachian Trail in CT and/or MA. Any suggestions on a nice place to pitch a tent for the night? Or where to start hiking from? It would have to be an out and back since we can only have one car for the trip. Any...

    Bear proof cannister

I also use the Bear Vault. It's nice to have a clear canister so you can see what's in it. Last summer I camped at Avalanche camp for two nights, right past Marcy Dam. On the first night the canister was only 10 feet from our tent and we had two bears come and kick it around at 3AM. I clapped my...
