When the roads will be open for...

You'll be fine. Magalloway Rd is the dirt road off of Rt 3 in Pittsburg (maybe near mile marker 235 +/-) that you turn onto to get to the mountain. That closed gate is long after the point where you take that right turn off of Magalloway to get to the trailhead.

When the roads will be open for...

Magalloway Rd is open from Rt 3, but gated at the river crossing at MM11. i.e., you can get to Magalloway Mtn from Rt 3, but not from Parmacheenee Rd in Maine. The road is in fine shape.

Thanksgiving in the Whites (or VT?). Where to eat?

Another vote for the Highland Center. We go there most years and the food is always top notch.

favorite/most convenient town in the Whites ?

Lancaster Interesting thread. If I were to buy a primary residence in that area, I'd give Lancaster a good look. Real estate prices are lower there than in the White Mtns Proper but it's very close to the Whites, the North Country, Nash Stream, Prospect Mtn, Weeks State Park and other natural...

more New England mountain lion rumors

That siting happened within 2 miles and 2 weeks of the mountain lion I saw last month. I feel vindicated!

more New England mountain lion rumors

Well, I saw one in Whitefield two Saturdays ago. Here's a copy of the note I sent to F&G documenting it. I saw a mountain lion today in Whitefield. I was driving south on Rt 3 behind two other cars (a Volvo wagon and a Cadillac) at 3:45pm, when the cat dashed out in front of the Volvo and ran...

Another North Country Prison in Lancaster?

Thanks 'bagger, I always appreciate your North Country updates. If/when they ever get widespread coverage for broadband internet, I think that would be a giant step towards economic recovery up north. I live "down below" but I've got a small house in Stewartstown, too, and if I had a broadband...

Banff...1 year of remote camera shots

That is frickin' awesome! Last November, I planted a game camera deep in the woods in Pittsburg, NH, in an early successional area (clearcut 2-3 years prior) in hopes of getting shots of whatever breed of cat was hunting the area. I wont be able to retrieve the camera until the logging roads...

New TV Show About "Maine State Game Wardens" on Animal Planet

Just saw an episode over the weekend. There was a segment on a trail adopter (a 3 mile segment of the Grafton Loop) who got lost in the woods. Happy ending; he walked out unhurt the next morning. Wonder if it was anyone from VFTT? Pretty good show if you need a quick fix of backwoods.

New TV Show About "Maine State Game Wardens" on Animal Planet

Same here. That's why I got caught up on watching "American Loggers" on Discovery. I'll watch this show too. Thanks for the heads up on it.

Tripoli Road to become regular campground

This will be a good thing if it help to clear up the problem of everyone leaving their trash at their campsites. The sites along the river are some of the filthiest campsites in NH.

    Snow north.

Was at my camp in Stewartstown yesterday - maybe 2" of new snow at the most. This is typically a big week for Lopstick and other hotels, with standing reservations made from year to year. Everyone called and cancelled this year. Nowhere near enough snow for sledding up there. Locals say this...

Berlin NH Biomass Power Plant Most Likely a Go

This is good news, perhaps doubly good news if the energy produced by the biomass plant lessens the need for the Northern Pass. Is that possible?

    Perseids

Thanks Nessmuk, good info. Maybe it was the speed at which they crossed the sky (61 km/sec or 136,453 mph!) that gave me the illusion that they were lower than they were.

    Perseids

When you see a meteor flaming out across the sky, what altitude are they at? We saw a half-dozen or so this past weekend and what struck me was how low they seemed to be. Most of the ones we saw flew almost directly overhead (north to south, generally) and seemed to fly under a very low ceiling...

Quebec City: hiking and other things to do

Hi Marty, Comment vas tu? I've been to Quebec City a few times and love it there. It's a beautiful city with wonderful people. I'm going to differ a little bit with the previous comments and say that knowing French would help. Quebec is nothing like Toronto. Quebec is a very provincial place...
