NEHHw finish on Baxter Peak 3-10-12

So glad that we finally made it! What a perfect day we had for it too. Great day, great group, great times!

Checking in From the AT, Part 4

Living on Appalachian time Another week has flown by. The obvious signs are near empty food bags, low energy, and sore feet. I've gone over 350 miles since my journey began almost four weeks ago. My pack has shrunk and I think I have too a little bit. Hard to tell. The days out here seem to last...

Checking in From the AT, Part 3

Timing, planning, and other things beyond my control The past week feels like it was a month or a year ago. Bland now has a certain nostalgia about it. I wound up meeting Clean Shave and sharing a motel room with him and there were others staying there as well, so we actually had a ball there...

Checking in from the AT - Part 2

"Life moves pretty fast. If you don't stop and look around once in a while, you could miss it." - Ferris Bueller I've always loved this quote and am finding it to be true on the trail, even when you're taking life at two miles per hour. During my first week out of Damascus, I've seen things go...

Checking in from the AT - Part 1

For those unaware, I am currently came down to Damascus, VA for Trail Days and am now hiking north on the AT. I am keeping a blog doublebow.blogspot.com but will also post my somewhat weekly entries here. There are more of a general nature and less trail/peak specific. I hope you find them...

    Rescue on Mt Katahdin

A group of four of us were up there Saturday and it was pretty brutal on the Abol slide. Between the wind and snow it was near whiteout conditions so we turned back just before Thoreau Spring. Easy to see how the trail could be lost. I sure wouldn'y have wanted to spend the night out!

VNBs Gathering - Weekend of 4/8

I think Magpie and I should be able to make it. We're right near McNeil's, so hopping on 91 and heading south is easy for us. Maybe I'll make a special batch of homebrew to share...

    Katahdin -- Presidents Day Weekend!!

Right, I've done Baxter Peak via the same route we'll be doing in a single day. To be sure, it's long and not for the beginner, but if you're an experienced winter hiker with a good amount of stamina, it's definitely doable. In actuality, mileage-wise it's similar to Owl's Head (18.5mi...

    Katahdin -- Presidents Day Weekend!!

So I'm leading a group for an single day trip up Katahdin over President's Day Weekend. We're going to be doing it as a day hike. The plan is to drive up Friday and spend the night in Millinocket at a motel. Then either Saturday or Sunday (depending on the weather), we'll get an early start...

Abraham and Ellen (VT) -- 1/22/11

On Saturday, Dizzy, Caldwell, and I climbed these two peaks via the ski trails to the ridge. We spotted a car at the Mt Ellen parking lot, and drove to the Lincoln peak area. Going up, we stuck to the trail all the way to the left, stopping in at the lodge half way up which we reached in about...

    Rain pants vs. Ski pants???

I hear you on the butt thing. The reason I've enjoyed rainpants is because I do a lot of butt sliding either intentionally or accidentally. Bushwacking I find more than my share of sprucetraps too. I also value the full-zips. I hike warm/cool enough that while doing the W48 in my combination of...

    Rain pants vs. Ski pants???

For winter hiking, I've been using a pair of Red Ledge full-zip rain pants as a shell over my 3-season hiking pants and this has worked really well for years. The dual zippers have allowed me to reach all the pockets in my hiking pants while still having the shell mostly zipped. Unfortunately...

    Hikin' Sumfin' Saturdee!

I need to get out for a hike. Bad. I know it's only been two weeks, but it feels like two months. I'm considering the following: Whiteface & Passaconaway Isolation Carrigain (could be persuaded to do loop) Kinsmans (could be persuaded to do whole ridge) Garfield Any of these would be good...

Ohio Highpoint, 8/9/10 -- End of Cross Country Highpointing Spree (33 States)

Wow! How amazing. I've been away from the site for a while and just stumbled across your adventure as I was doing a little homework for my and Magpie's trip up Mansfield tomorrow. We just got back from a three day trip to the highpoints of PA, MD, and WV plus other attractions. Way to go for...

Hey Tom, Amy and I are starting to work on Views and Brews. Could you help me to get signed up for the forum there? My email address is [email protected] and I obviously want to use my trailname on that site too. BTW, the VT list has some closed places on it and is missing some brewpubs...

    Whirlwind Highpointing Roadtrip! -- 8/20-23

Actually, the summit of Backbone Mountain is about a mile from the road and you climb 700'. This was the biggest climb of the three and one stretch was a little steep. It was great to actually get in something of a climb and feel like we were doing at least a little work for the peak. It was a...

    Whirlwind Highpointing Roadtrip! -- 8/20-23

Well, I'm back on here after too long away... Last Friday night, Magpie and I drove from NH down to PA and spent the night. Saturday morning, we set out for Mount Davis, the highest point in Pennsylvania. Along the way, we passed Amish in their buggies, a ton of beautiful wind turbines, farm...

    Help/advice - "hiker car" needed??

I had an '02 Forester and loved it. Perfect for logging roads, great for gear, and alright to sleep in (you'd be fine). Ex has it now. I'd definitely go that route. Finding a used Outback or Forester in your range shouldn't be a problem.

Cherry Mountain (Mt. Martha) and Owl's Head - 08/07/2010

Thank you for posting this report. I had been planning to go up via Owl's Head and come down via Cherry Mountain to 115. The info about the trailhead closing is sad but useful.
