    Yosemite!

Thanks for the tips on the snow, after looking into it further, we pushed the trip back a few weeks to make sure Tioga road would be open. We found out there is a shuttle bus from the village to Tuolumne Meadow so now we're thinking about extending the backpacking trip by a day so we can leave...

    Yosemite!

Wow! Great tips from all. My wife and I will be there all week and have some day hikes planned, but our friends can only join us for a long weekend, which is why we're limiting the backpacking trip to 2 nights. I appreciate all the information. Keep it coming!

    Yosemite!

Hi Everyone! I'm looking for some Yosemite advice. In mid June, my wife and I are taking two very fit, but inexperienced friends with us to the park and want to do a three day / two night backpacking trip. I'm wondering if anyone has experience in Yosemite and could recommend a specific...

    Displaying trails on Google Earth?

There is a sub layer in GE under the US National Parks layer that you can turn on to show the trails in the National Parks. I don't know if it has been set up for all of them, but I have used it for yellowstone and the tetons and it's somewhat accurate. It even lists distances...

    Crampons: Step-In vs. Strap-In

REI carries a lot of soft mountaineering boots on the West coast and can ship them East for you to try on, free of charge. At least that's what I was told at the store in Hingham.

    Brat Camp

I agree with you guys that the camp is a great idea, but having TV cameras rolling while these MINORS are trying to change their lives is absolutely distasteful. Oh, and from what I've read, after they are done working with the kids, they have the parents spend a few weeks at the camp with them...

    Multi-Fuel Stove Question....

Great information! I am indeed planning on taking the stove overseas, which is why I'm looking for one with multi-fuel capabilities. The thing that worries me about the MSR, is the plastic parts, but it sounds like that hasn't been an issue for most people.

    Camping Stats Down

Except that the people who don't appreciate it forest, are the ones who reject state & fed. budgets that pay for the parks and reserves. I agree that overuse can be a problem, but I think an appreciation of nature by more people would be good for nature as a whole, and the best way to gain that...

    Multi-Fuel Stove Question....

Thanks everyone! Great info! I have a pocket rocket for the warm months, but I'm hoping to go on a few overnights this winter which is why I'm looking at these particular stoves. I'm still torn, but obviously have some time to mull over things. Thanks again.

    Multi-Fuel Stove Question....

I've been in the market for a good multi-fuel stove for a while and have narrowed it down to the "Brunton Optimus Nova Muli-Fuel Stove" and the "MSR DragonFly Backpacking Stove" Having never used either, this has been based completely on research and reviews. Has anyone had any experience with...

    Frankenpine approved by APA today

I remember a proposal for a tower to go in at YMCA Camp Chingachgook on Pilot Knob when I was working there about 7 (oh my god I'm getting old) years ago. Rumor had it that they were going to erect it in the soccer field. Sara do you remember this?

    favorite campgrounds in NH/ME

My favorite spot in ME is Recompence Shores Campground. It's right on the water just outside of Freeport. The website is www.freeportcamping.com It's a great place to use as homebase if you're into kayaking and/or shopping.

    Cell phones and hiking

I feel the same way, it just doesn't bother me as much as it seems to bother others. The thing that gets me heated up are the ring tones. When I reach a summit, I feel like I've escaped all that crap that goes along with the M-F,9-5 drudgery, but the ring of a cell phone can snap me out of...
