    AMC Huts Open Again

I’ll add that at Madison, when I swung by there was a pump bottle of hand sanitizer to use adjacent to the outdoor spigot.

Parking is now near the gate at the junction of Tunnel Stream Rd.

Big list of WMNF toilet facility closures

Not a bathroom closure per se, but the powers that be have closed the access road to Waterville Valley ski area for unauthorized vehicles starting at the Tripoli Road split. I’d imagine this is to discourage use of the ski slopes, although it states on the accompanying sign that foot traffic is...

Current snow conditions? - Algonquin Tr./ Black Mountain (Sandwich Range)

They usually have a pair of jersey barriers in place blocking entry when closed.

Flat Mtn Pond and McCrillis Trails to Whiteface question

It looks like nothing is there for parking because there is none. :p McCrillis Path starts up off a driveway on private land, so the parking is 3/4 mile away at Flat Mtn Pond. The road walk is beautiful through the farm land, though.

    BSP Trp

Nicely done. I enjoyed the Saddle to Baxter Cut-Off descent this past July on my way back down to Hunt. After an out and back across the Knife Edge, I only spent a few minutes at the Baxter summit due to overcrowding. Enough to drink and have a snack. Frustrating watching the summit steward...

Long abandoned route of the Osseo Trail from Lincoln NH

Agreed. Hiked it back in May for a good view of Loon. I got one but I had to work for it bushin’ around, a little disappointed. Probably won’t be back for a while.

    New AT record

**UPDATE** Karel finished at 41d 7h 39m. Congratulations to him, impressive. Barring something crazy happening, a new supported speed record will be set today. And it’s no nail biter... Karel Sabbe, a Belgian, will top Joe “Stringbean” McConaughy by 4 days. After running all night to finish up...

Appalachia Parking Area - The New Lafayette Place?

Which coincides with the creation of Instagram. #IHikedBeforeInstagramMadeItCool *sigh* I’m with you sierra, I did the loop up there a couple years back on a Friday. My Uncle wanted to hike it so I said, “what the hell.” Far from the experience I wish to have while outdoors. Don’t want to know...

    Bear Warning Lincoln Woods area

Let’s just say as a good first rule of thumb... If you need to duck when walking under your bear hang, or if you CAN’T walk directly under it. It’s not hung high enough! Lol

    Bear Warning Lincoln Woods area

With all the clueless noobs trying their hand at hiking and backpacking these days, the pickin’s must be easy for Yogi. Some people’s attempts at a legit bear bag hang that I’ve seen have been downright laughable.

Stupid Question On Lighting Canister Stoves

It probably isn’t that hard, and in theory it should work fine. But I’ve always just skipped the possible fuel waste, singed fingers, and extra effort and used my lighter or torch. Boom, easy. Easy is good when backpacking.

Stupid Question On Lighting Canister Stoves

I understand the thought, like it... But just pack a lighter, why make things harder than they need to be? Its already tough enough backcountry cooking when you’re tired at the end of a long day. I got a Soto Pocket Torch for XMas one year, super handy for lighting a pocket rocket (campfire...

Chandler Brook Trail on a Windy Day

I’ve always looked at Wamsutta and Chandler Brook and thought of connecting them for a loop via the auto road’s winter cutoff route. Aside from being adjacent to/on the auto road for some distance, any thoughts on if the cutoff would be a favorable route for hiking? Would either trail be a...

Caribou Tr. (North) - Bog Road, Maine.

Not the busiest or most popular trail head but just a heads up. You may want to avoid it for the next couple weeks because the parking could be swamped. Aug 5-18, the “Rainbow Family” is holding a gathering near the end of Bog Road. Backstory - Five or so years ago while on vacation at Kezar...

    Mittersill

The view from Mittersill summit is great, yes. Maybe its that one section on Steve’s blog that really sticks out in my mind. Either way hiking ski trails isn’t my taste. Also I saw the upper part had been blasted, not sure the condition of that in the 4 years since...
