    Following Atticus

The first night I read three chapters, and then stopped. I realized I wanted to savor Tom's words, take them in slowly like a good hike, enjoying each moment. I must say it's a great journey. Hat's off to the distinguised Mr. Finch to inspire those fortunate enough to have followed him through...

Winding down the year and planning on getting out a lot more once the school year ends. Almost thought this holiday weekend was a washout for me, but then said the heck with it, and made a drive up Monday for an awesome day hike with the mosquitoes. I've still got a darned good pace in the...

Terra and Blue's Excellent Adventure ~warning: for trail dog lovers~

Awwwwww.....that just made my day. Give Terra a good rubbing behind the ears and a treat for me. Not just any treat, give her one of those Jeremey treats that she loves. :) Do we have the start of another dog and the mountains book here?

It's time for a family tent...

Go with two separate tents. It's the only way you'll ever really be happy. For thirty years I used the Eureka Timberline basecamp 6 person for car camping. It is an awesome tent that I can set up alone in 3 minutes flat. Five minutes in the dark without a light. Time me. I've done it. You...

    New Record for a Rabbit!!!

Big congratulations to Alain, and a bunny hug for Green PinPin. You've been really hopping this winter. Green PinPin must be a snowshoe hare to break trail in the snow this winter. :)

Trish and Alex story to be published by Broadway Books

I'd like to see the smile on Alex's face when the first book comes off the press! Is the book geared toward children? I've got a few little girls whom I'd like to give copies of the book.

No Skylight yet. :( Getting back into shape for a 20 mile day is taking some time and I don't get up to the high peaks like I used to. Looking at hopefully 2011 for Gray and Skylight. Longest pack in for an overnight was just over 6 miles one way to Calkins Brook in the Sewards. Made good...

Torn Meniscus and the High Peaks

I went about 9 months heeding the first guy's advice of just using ibuprofen before getting another doc. A a serious hiker, it turns out it didn't work for me. By the time I had surgery a year after the first diagnosis, I had developed a cyst within the cartilage and the tear was much worse...

Torn Meniscus and the High Peaks

You could try going downhill backwards. Actually I'm being serious. After surgeries on both knees for medial meniscus tears I became a PITA to my physical therapist because I needed to hike but the pain was pretty bad on the downhills during recovery. He suggested going down backwards. It...

    GPS tracklog inconsistencies

I've had the same issue this summer several times with a new 60csx. Walking along a peninsula, both out and back the track had me clearly in the lake. It was laughable but at the same time raised the question "why". Spider...to this techno challenged human, if decreasing the time between...

Sabrina!!! Doing 1000% better! Yup, that is one thousand. No little aneurysm can slow me down :). Getting back into hiking. Working on getting back into some semblance of shape while doing my best to follow the weight limitation set by the neurosurgeon. Hip is still weak from the stroke so...

    Degenerative Disc Disease

I don't have any advice on DDD. Only words of encouragement. Live life to its fullest and pray for the best. Do everything your PT says. Attitude is everything. And I'll sign on to be a member of your cheering squad. :)

    Letter to a Camper

I have questioned my sanity after spending free weekends moving a large box coated with dung. Heavy and filthy. Never set up your tent in an area with a slight depression and no trees. :)
