    Thoughts on Newfoundland hiking

They have certainly shut down the cod fishing, but that is only one spiecies. Still lots of crab and lobster fishing, Sea Trout, Flounder, Ocean Bass, Kusk, Mackerel, Herring, salmon... I think most of the lobster seasons are closed by mid Aug except maybe in the north west tip. Actually you...

    Presi Traverse w/a hut stay...

What about options? Night one at RMC and get some of the elevation gain out of the way. Then Clouds the next night, or Mitzpa if Lakes is full or closed later in sept. Sure it can be done over two days, But if you were to stay at Madison first night it leaves a very long hike in the shortening...

    Thoughts on Newfoundland hiking

Your kidding right, no sea food in Newfoundland? ;) Best is going down to the boats and getting it freash, back to the campsite to cook it up ourselves. Now, I don't expect much seafood hiking the Long Range, but think I have some freezdried shimp left over from last year to go with the...

    Thoughts on Newfoundland hiking

Everything is booked, thanks all for the tips. Grear is packed, house sitter arranged and heading off soon. We got a booking to do the Longe Range Traverse, sounds like it will be a good challenge, esp when the word is to figgure about 1km/h or .5 mph for progress. Brushed up on map and...

    Thoughts on Newfoundland hiking

Thanks for the ideas, will look more into some of these places. Thinking seriously on the Long Range Traverse. Sounds like a tough 22 miles (35k). The presidential traverse can be pulled off in a day, but they talk of 4-6 days for the Long Range Traverse. No trails, No markers, No crowds!

    Thoughts on Newfoundland hiking

Have not been able to do much NE hiking this year, been saving the money and vacation time for a 3 week trip to Newfoundland. Going to hike some sections of the East Coast Trail, some trails in Terra Nova and Gros More, then do some river paddling and maybe a couple days sea kayaking. Any tip...

Major Lessons Learned on Cannon and the Kinsmans – August 22, 2006

Good plug for the wilderness first aid. Everyone who goes backcountry should have at least a 2 day course. Ice pack won't do much of anything much for a head injury, limited value for the surface injury only and does nothing to help internal bleeding and rising ICP. Head injuries are red flag...

    How do YOU define "Wilderness"?

From a first aid point of view "wilderness" is two hours or more from difinative medical care. As a trained wilderness first aider/responder there are some levels of care you are only permitted to give if the situation is such that the medical care the patient requires is more than 2 hours away.

Sad News For Everest (Chinese building a road to base camp)

The numbers don't sound right. Here it would cost far more than that to build a road half the lenght on flat ground and it would take years. I just can't imagine it coming to be in 4 months. Sad, a "build it and they will come" mentality. Not that there is a real need. Next there will be a cog...

    Summer sleeping bag

My WM highlite is up to 60 or 70 nights now and still looks like new. Despite the 35f rating I have slept well on several occasions down to the low 20s with just a touque and light fleese. Only having a 3/4 length zipper is a minor pain, but that is the price to pay for a 16 oz bag.

Help: I Need a Woman with Cold Hands

Overshell mits work great. Then layer underneath, nothing too tight. A good hat and neck warmer help keep the hands warm too.

    Repairing Gaiters After Crampon Run-In?

I put a hole, my gators and gtx pants last time out, not the conventional way, but steped up on a high lip and then caught my lower leg as it followed on the side of the uphill crampon. duhhh! Iron on patches seem to work well enough. Duct tape to make a quick fix. Don't have to dull all...

    ADK Wind

I was up in the avalanch pass area Friday night, wicked thunder storm then the temp dropped 30 deg and it snowed, very high winds, it went from warm and rainy Friday to absolutly freezing with 60-80+ mph winds on Marcy Saturday. Sunday it was like hiking on a warm sunny day in March. Three...

    Winter sleeping bag

As posted above weastern mountineering bags are very nice, I have had a few chances now to push them well below rating, 40f bag down into the 30s and high 20s and a 15f bag down to 5F, cool, but not cold at 3am. Look at the loft numbers, WM loft will be higher at a given rating than most other...

    1 pound summer bag?

Love my highlite/beothuk as named up here for the Canadian market. 40 deg rating, but have slept warm many nights down into the 30s even as low as mid 20s with just a 2oz silk liner. Less than a pound and keeps you warm, just a bit pricy.

    Mount Madison Rescue

Saw lot's of people how looked unprepaired last weekend, many of them old enough to know better. Just can't get my head around heading above treeline in 3-6" snow wearing jeans, cotton tee shirt, light wind breaker and running shoes. Saw more than a couple people doing this???
